YOUNGSTOWN -- A 37-year-old Mineral Ridge man faces misdemeanor assault and menacing charges after being accused of swinging at and threatening two nurses at St. Elizabeth Health Center, police reports show. The man was being treated in the emergency room about 1 a.m. today when he pushed a call light to contact the nurse. When she responded, he said he was having a seizure, stiffened and grabbed her hand, making her call for help. According to reports, he also swung and kicked at the nurse and another. He then made threats against the nursing and security staffs before being transported to the Mahoning County Justice Center, police said.
Mother reports threat
YOUNGSTOWN -- The mother of three Immaculate Conception School pupils reported to police that the children and a schoolmate had been threatened on the South Side by a neighbor boy with a gun as they walked to their Idlewood Avenue homes after school. The woman said the children, ages 11, 11, 10 and 8, were on Boston Avenue near Glenwood Avenue about 4 p.m. Tuesday when the boy, 10, rode by on a bicycle, yelled profanities, pushed an 11-year-old girl and rode away. He returned with a silver handgun and pointed it at the group, threatening to shoot, the woman said.
Shots fired into car
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 44-year-old South Side man reported to city police that someone had fired gunshots into a vehicle parked beside his home. The man said he and his wife heard gunshots outside their East Florida Avenue home sometime during the night Monday. Tuesday morning, they discovered that the vehicle, owned by another man, had been shot up. Police discovered five bullet holes in the vehicle and three bullet holes in the house.
Boy's trafficking charge
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 17-year-old South Side resident was arrested on a charge of aggravated trafficking in cocaine after police discovered him walking in the middle of Erie Street on the South Side. Officers had warned the East Myrtle Avenue teen not to walk in the street about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday but he ignored their warnings. Police said that when they were issuing a summons for failing to walk on sidewalks, they found a clear plastic bag in his front shirt pocket containing seven smaller packets of suspected crack cocaine. Each packet held two or more rocks of suspected crack, they said.
Drug, weapons charges
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 19-year-old South Side resident was arrested on charges of carrying a concealed weapon and possession of drug paraphernalia. City police said they found him carrying a loaded semiautomatic handgun and a digital scale containing suspected cocaine residue after a traffic stop. The Labelle Street resident was a passenger in a car stopped on Hudson Avenue at Ferndale Avenue on the South Side at about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday. Police said they searched the man and found the items after they discovered he was wanted for failing to appear in Youngstown Municipal Court on charges of driving with a suspended license and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
Accident injures man
SALEM -- Dennis Hamilton of North Jackson broke his hip when the forklift he was operating at E.F. Quality Heating Treating, 431 W. Wilson St., came off of a ramp and fell over, a company spokesman said. The accident occurred about 10:30 a.m. Monday. Hamilton was taken to Salem Community Hospital, where he was in fair condition this morning.
Suspected drugs found
AUSTINTOWN -- Police said they found suspected painkillers and psychoactive substances Tuesday evening in a car involved in an accident at the intersection of South Raccoon Road and Mahoning Avenue. Police will decide if they will charge the car's driver, 42, of Cannon Road, with drug possession. The report of the accident was not immediately available. The report of the man's arrest, however, said he could not walk straight or answer simple questions. He was charged with driving under the influence. Police found the drugs in two prescription bottles in the car. The label on one of the bottles had been destroyed, and the other bottle did not have a label.
