Plan for new school
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- City officials are expected to vote Thursday on a plan for the new city high school. School officials are seeking a subdivision of property on East Street and East Lincoln Avenue where the new campus-style school will be built. City Solicitor James Manolis said the school district plans appear to be consistent with all city subdivision laws. In other business, city officials are also considering changing zoning laws to permit institutions of higher learning in any area, Manolis said. The Lawrence County Learning Center, which provides space for nearby community colleges and others, recently moved to a building in an area zoned for manufacturing, which does not permit schools. Manolis said council is considering whether to allow schools in any area as long as a conditional use permit is granted by the city.

Lordstown school audit
LORDSTOWN -- State Auditor Jim Petro's office has released an audit of the school district covering July 1, 2000, through June 30, 2001. The report found that 12 accounts had deficits throughout the year. The funds include general, food services, bond retirement, district-managed student activities, career development, teacher development and miscellaneous state grant funds. "This indicates money from other funds has been used to pay the obligations of these funds," the report said. The district has been in fiscal emergency since December 2000 and a state oversight commission oversees district finances.
