YOUNGSTOWN -- A 21-year-old Oak Hill Avenue man was in stable condition in St. Elizabeth Health Center on Sunday night after he broke his pelvis when he crashed a stolen pickup into a tree about 2:30 p.m. Sunday, police said.
Officers said the driver sped away after they spotted the stolen vehicle on the South Side. The driver eluded police but drove the vehicle into a tree on Avondale Avenue.
Police said a witness held the man until they arrived. Police said the driver was carrying a small amount of marijuana. Charges are pending.
Waste dump suit filed
AKRON (AP) -- An organization has accused the federal government of withholding public information concerning radiation at a now-closed toxic waste dump.
The Northeast Ohio American Friends Service Committee filed its suit Thursday in U.S. District Court in Akron against the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Army and the Department of Energy.
Friends Service, a Quaker social action organization, wants additional information from the agencies on radiation at the 30-acre Industrial Excess Landfill in Uniontown in Stark County.
The suit charges that the agencies have illegally withheld requested documents, failed to conduct adequate searches for records or failed to respond to Freedom of Information Act requests filed in 2000 and 2001.
The requested documents concern radiation that may have been disposed of in the federal Superfund site.
