DAV volunteers
SAN DIEGO -- The Disabled American Veterans has launched a new volunteer recruitment initiative aimed at increasing by 10 percent the DAV's corps of volunteers by year's end. Beginning in February, local DAV departments and chapters will begin their own recruitment efforts for the Volunteer Services Program, whose members comfort disabled veterans in need of medical care, according to DAV National Cmdr. George H. Steese Jr.

TRAINING
Naval War College grad
Army Lt. Col. Thomas A. Allmon graduated from the Naval War College, Newport, R.I., a multidisciplinary professional military education program designed to provide executive-level preparation for higher responsibilities as senior officers. Qualified students receive a master of arts degree in national security and strategic studies.
Allmon is the son of Thomas E. and Janice J. Allmon, Hanoverton. The colonel is a 1975 graduate of Southern Local High School, Salineville; a 1979 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, N.Y.; and earned a master's degree in 1991 from Central Michigan University.
HONORS
Army medal
Army Spec. John D. Allen has been decorated with the Army Commendation Medal. He is assigned with the 2nd Infantry Division at Camp Casey, Korea. Allen is a son of Wanda S. Allen, Rural Route 1, New Galilee, and John D. Allen, Rural Route 2, Wampum, and is a 1997 graduate of Mohawk Junior-Senior High School, Mount Jackson.
Air Force medal
Air Force Senior Master Sgt. Julius J. Ser III has been decorated with the Meritorious Service Medal. Ser is a career assistance adviser assigned to the 1st Fighter Wing, Langley Air Force Base, Va. He is the son of Joseph and Margy J. Ser of 1002 Norris Ave., Farrell, Pa. He graduated in 1973 from Sharon Senior High School, Pa., and received an associate degree in 1994 from Community College of the Air Force, Biloxi, Miss.
