Man killed in collision
ROGERS -- An 18-year-old Rogers man died after losing control of his vehicle on state Route 7 Saturday about a mile south of Rogers, said a dispatcher for the Lisbon post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
Nicholas S. Skrinjar, 45663 Pine Hollow Road, was driving south about 9:40 a.m. when he lost control of his car, which slid into the northbound lane, colliding head-on with a car driven by a 45-year-old East Liverpool woman. Skrinjar's car then rotated and came to rest in a ditch. The woman, who was not identified, suffered minor injuries.
Mailman alerts coupleabout fire in home
YOUNGSTOWN -- A mailman alerted James and Sheryl Thomas that smoke was coming from the roof of their 3028 Dearborn Ave. home around 11:51 a.m. Saturday.
Fire department officials said the couple was inside the North Side home at the time but escaped. Officials believe it was an electrical fire that started in the attic but said it is still under investigation.
Firefighters were on the scene for more than one hour. Damages were estimated at $10,000.
Weapons charge
YOUNGSTOWN -- City police charged a 13-year-old pupil at East Middle School on East High Avenue with conveyance of a dangerous ordnance/deadly weapon on school premises, police reports show. The arrest came about 8 a.m. Friday after an assistant principal at the East Side school confiscated a folding knife with a 4-inch blade from the boy's locker. The youth was taken to the Mahoning County Juvenile Justice Center.
Teen faces chargeafter classroom fire
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 14-year-old student at Woodrow Wilson High School on Gibson Street faces a charge of aggravated arson after alcohol, cotton balls and a paper towel were used to set a fire in a classroom, police reports show.
A teacher at the South Side school said she discovered a cotton ball on fire in the back of her classroom about 9 a.m. Friday and stomped it out before seeing a bigger fire and hitting a fire alarm. When she returned to the fire area, the larger fire had been extinguished. When police arrived, the youth said, "I didn't mean to do it." A purple lighter and partially burned cotton ball were confiscated by the city's arson investigator, and the youth was transported to the Mahoning County Juvenile Justice Center.
Bullet holes at home
YOUNGSTOWN -- The 38-year-old resident of a South Side home reported to city police that someone had shot gunfire at his home, police reports show. The man said he was asleep in his West Ravenwood Avenue home about 11 p.m. Thursday when he was awakened by gunshots. He said he and his wife discovered three bullet holes in the home about 6 a.m. Friday.
Woman hurt in crash
GIRARD -- A 24-year-old Beaver Falls woman was in critical condition at St. Elizabeth Health Center late Saturday night after a two-car accident near Interstate 80 and U.S. Route 422 around 8:20 a.m. Saturday.
Police said an 18-year-old Sharon man involved in the accident was cited for failure to control. No other information, including the names of those involved in the crash, was available Saturday night.
Ham radio classes
CANFIELD -- The 20/9 Radio Club will offer beginner and upgrade classes for ham radio licenses beginning Wednesday at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center, 7300 Palmyra Road.
