Girard science studentsdevelop a land lab
GIRARD -- Junior and senior science students at Girard High School have started to develop a land lab at lower Girard Lakes. Under the direction of teacher Ed Miner, the students have installed stations for water testing, soil testing, stream monitoring and wildlife identification at the lab, which is about four miles from the high school. The lab is funded by Dominion East Ohio.
The school plans additional stations for pollution/contaminant control, plot sampling and historical analysis and projection. Students also hope to develop a nature trail and to study careers in outdoor resource management.
Once finished, the lab will be open to all district students with high school students acting as guides and instructors.
CSU program targetsshortage of engineers
CLEVELAND -- To help stem a growing national shortage of engineers, the Fenn College of Engineering at Cleveland State University is conducting a free Engineering Career Guidance Program 9 a.m. to noon Feb. 9. The program is aimed at students in grades nine to 12.
Students who preregister for the event will be matched with a local engineering professional for an "Engineer-for-a-Day" job-shadowing opportunity that will take place Feb. 22.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Ohio and western Pennsylvania's residents who are deaf or have partial hearing loss are invited with their families to a free college information night sponsored by the National Technical Institute for the Deaf at Rochester Institute of Technology. The event will be 7 to 9:30 p.m. Feb. 4 at the Hilton Cleveland South Hotel in Independence. The evening will include a brief presentation, question and answer time with NTID/RIT alumni and a performance by NTID theater students.
NTID was established at RIT to enhance career opportunities for people who are deaf or partially deaf. More than 1,100 deaf students from around the world study, live and socialize with 14,000 hearing students on RIT's campus in Rochester, N.Y.
