Old-timers to hostMickey Lolich
GIRARD -- Mickey Lolich, former American League pitcher, and Fred Favier will be guest speakers at the Girard Old-timers Baseball Club's winter organizational meeting Sunday at the Girard IFH Club starting at 12:45 p.m.
Manager Russ Hake said that all current and past players are invited to attend the session, and that election of officers will be held.
Mooney boyswin session title
STRUTHERS -- The Cardinal Mooney boy's soccer team registered a 6-0-1 record to win the first session championship of the Valley Sports Indoor Soccer League.
The only blemish on the Mooney record was an 8-8 tie with Salem which went 5-1-1 for second place.
In the fall Mooney also reached the soccer regional tournament for the first time in school history.
Popovec, recovered,returns to team
MEADVILLE, Pa. -- Michelle Popovec of Canfield has returned to the Allegheny College women's basketball team, after being sidelined for five games due to aggravating a previous knee injury.
Popovec, a senior center from Canfield High who has had two knee surgeries, scored four points and had four rebounds in Allegheny's 69-60 win over the College of Wooster Wednesday night.
She is averaging 11.6 points and 8.2 rebounds.
The Gators' next game is Saturday at Kenyon College at 2 p.m.
1962 Titan teamto have reunion
NEW WILMINGTON -- Westminster College will play host to a 40th anniversary reunion of players from its 1961-62 men's basketball team on the campus Saturday, Jan. 26.
The 1961-62 team, coached by C.G. "Buzz" Ridl, posted a 26-3 record and was voted the "Top Small College Team in the Nation" by both the Associated Press and United Press International.
The team will be honored at a dinner at Russell Hall at 5 p.m., and recognized at halftime of the Westminster-Grove City game. There will also be a private reception following the game.
Players expected to attend are Sandy Dalgish, Bill Douds, Bob Douds, Ron Galbreath, Bill Hennon, Jack Kells and Bob Oravetz. Lou Skurcenski and Ridl will be represented by their widows.
Ashland No. 3in NCAA wrestling
ASHLAND -- The Ashland University wrestling team -- led by Youngstown-area performers Chris Canale (Canfield High), Chris Peretti (Boardman) and Jim Phillips (Howland) -- is ranked No. 1 in the region and No. 3 in the nation in NCAA Division II.
Canale, a 184-pound sophomore, has a 15-4 record and is ranked No. 2 in the region.
Peretti, a 135-pound senior, sports a 17-0 record and ranks No. 3 in the region. He won a title at the Midwest Classic.
Phillips, a 125-pound freshman, has a 19-4 record and No. 7 ranking in the region. Phillips also won at the Midwest Classic.
YSU playershelp hockey team
BETHEL PARK, Pa. -- Four Youngstown State University students recorded points for the North team which defeated the South 8-5 in the Western Pennsylvania College Hockey Association all-star game.
Matt Cerimele, Tom Skook and Mike Drozda each had a goal and an assist and Adam Krehnovi had an assist in the game played at Blade Runners Arena.
YSU coach Bill Gardner was picked to assist the North team in the game.
Canfield sophomorerolls 299 game
YOUNGSTOWN -- Canfield High School sophomore Mike Rubosky rocked the Mahoning Valley High School Bowling Conference with a 299 during a match against Youngstown City on Wednesday at A-Plus Family Bowl. Rubosky's 299 came in the first game. Youngstown went on to win the match, 2981 to 2750.
In a match at Camelot, Boardman senior Bill Paparodis had 290 against Mooney.
Girard's Barta46th in PBA event
RENO, Nev. -- Adam Barta of Girard was tied for 46th after the second round (10 games) of the PBA ABC Masters at the National Bowling Stadium.
With 2,129 pinfall, Barta was tied with Michael Edwards of Oklahoma City, Okla. and Ralph Solan of Farr West, Utah. Former Warrenite Jeff Germann and Youngstown's Jim Dodge missed the cut.

Alborn namedto ski-jumping team
PARK CITY, Utah -- Alan Alborn, who has finished in the Top 10 three times in World Cup ski jumping events this season, was selected to a young U.S. team for the Salt Lake City Olympics.
The 21-year old Alborn, from Anchorage, Alaska, will be competing in his second Winter Games. He'll be joined by three teen-agers on the youngest U.S. team in history.

Yagudin reclaimsEuropean title
LAUSANNE, Switzerland -- Alexei Yagudin reclaimed the European Figure Skating title, but it was an imperfect victory with silver medalist Alexander Abt beating him on the jumps.
