GYMNASTICS Postseason tune-up set at Fitch High

Saturday's tournament is named in memory of Renee Romito.
AUSTINTOWN -- The third Renee Romito Memorial Gymnastics invitational will be held Saturday at Fitch High Falcon gymnasium.
The meet is the only one scheduled in northeast Ohio and will offer some outstanding performances.
The event is scheduled from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m.
Eight of the state's top schools -- Chardon, Fitch, Hudson, Mayfield, West Geauga, Hilliard Darby, Hilliard Davidson and Thomas Worthington, will compete in the tune-up for the state meet.
The talent: Some state qualifiers are returning from last year. Featured gymnasts will include Fitch seniors Shannon Crowley, Mikhi Horvath and Kristen Melnek; Nikkie Lippe, Mandy Makar, Gretchen Metcalf, Lauren Mitchell and Linda Toth of West Geauga; Kelly McDermott, a junior, and sophomores Kelly Light and Franci Burzminski of Hudson.
The tournament is named in memory of Romito, who was a Fitch gymnast prior to her death in a July 2000 auto crash in Geauga County that also claimed the life of classmate Samantha Mock.
Both girls, who would have been juniors this year, were also cheerleaders and honor students.
The gymnast earning the high all-around score will be presented with the Renee Romito Memorial Trophy and the team trophy, the William Hannon Memorial Trophy, named for the father of a Fitch gymnast who suffered a fatal heart attack while assisting the set-up for the 2000 meet.
Tickets for the tournament are $5 for adults and $3 for students. Middle school students and younger will be admitted free.
