Scouts to compete in outdoor events

PARKMAN -- The Arrowhead Boy Scout District Winter Event will be Saturday at Camp Chickagami, state Route 168 in Geauga County.
More than 325 youths and 150 adults from Trumbull County will participate. The daylong event will begin with an 8:45 a.m. flag raising. An awards ceremony is set for 4 p.m.
Patrols of Scouts from more than 30 troops from Trumbull County will compete in a variety of outdoor skill challenges. They include winter camping, knot tying, compass orientation and wilderness survival.
Patrols that prove most proficient will receive prizes, including camping equipment and outdoor tools donated by Outback Gear at the Eastwood Mall and Mickey's Army and Navy in Warren.
Most participating troops will stay in tents and cabins from Friday evening through Sunday morning. A campfire and multimedia program will be at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
Dr. Ken LaPolla, event chairman, said the gathering is the area's largest and most anticipated by Scouts.
The Arrowhead District is part of the Greater Western Reserve Council that brings together Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Career Exploring and Learning for Life programs in Mahoning, Trumbull, Ashtabula, Geauga, Portage and Lake counties.
