MOUNT UNION COLLEGE Ceremony, exhibit to mark MLK Day

Events include workshops, songs and films depicting the civil rights movement.
ALLIANCE -- Mount Union College is sponsoring a series of events beginning at 9:30 a.m. Monday in memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Johnny Ford, former mayor of Tuskegee, Ala., and now state representative for Alabama's 82nd District, will give the keynote address at Rodman Playhouse Theater at 9:30 a.m.
The address will be followed by an awards ceremony. Both a student and a community award will be presented to a student and community member whose actions best exemplify the spirit of King's civil and human rights activities.
The keynote address will be followed by diversity workshops facilitated by Ford and Victoria Steward, diversity consultants to Mount Union. Workshops will be from 1 to 2 p.m. and 2:15 to 3:15 p.m. in Cope Music Hall. During each workshop period, participants can choose to attend "Conflict Resolutions" or "Struggles of the Movement."
Exhibit: The "Tunnel of Oppression," an interactive exhibit will be open from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Pia Fitzgerald, program coordinator for the Great Expectations program and assistant director for residence life at Mount Union, describes it as an interactive display dealing with oppression and prejudice of many kinds. The exhibit will be in the Alumni Room, located in the Hoover-Price Campus Center.
"Experiencing the Civil Rights Movement in Word and Song," which includes narration, song and films to tell the story of the key events in the civil rights movements will be presented at 3:30 p.m. in Hoover-Price.
Facilitators will be Dr. Donald Hobson, emeritus professor of religion and philosophy; Dr. Martin Horning, professor of economics; Matthew Horning, an area educator; Dr. Ivory Lyons, assistant professor of philosophy and religious studies and African-American studies; and Barbara Lyons, director of the MUC gospel choir and secretary in the education department.
