SHARON, Pa. -- Police arrested William D. Carthorn, 29, of Columbia Street at his home at 10:30 p.m. Tuesday on a warrant charging him with simple assault, aggravated assault, making terroristic threats and unlawful restraint.
Police said Carthorn got into an argument with his girlfriend around 3 a.m. Tuesday and, at one point, threatened her with a knife.
The woman suffered a cut on the finger during a struggle for the weapon and was punched several times in the face, police said. She told police Carthorn refused to let her leave his residence until 10 a.m. Carthorn was held overnight in jail and faced arraignment later today.

SHARON, Pa. -- The League of Women Voters of Mercer County will have an interview session with area state legislators at noon Jan. 25 in the Buhl-Henderson Community Room of the Shenango Valley Community Library, State Street and Sharpsville Avenue.

Airport authority
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Lawrence County commissioners appointed Kevin M. Guinaugh, Thomas Biasucci and John Drespling to the county airport authority. Guinaugh, of Union Township, will end his term in 2005, and Biasucci, of New Castle, and Drespling, of New Wilmington, will end their terms in 2006.
Pollution prevention
STONEBORO, Pa. -- The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection has come up with a $5,000 grant to help prevent pollution at a truck service site in the 400 block of Billy Boyd Road.
The Exit 34 Truck Service Center has a pair of underground fuel storage tanks that must be drained and cleaned, and the grant money will help meet that expense, said state Sen. Robert Robbins of Greenville, R-50th, who announced the grant approval. The money comes from a state Underground Storage Tank Pollution Prevention Grant Program.
Crime watch speaker
NORTH LIMA -- This month's Beaver Township Crime Watch meeting will feature a speaker from Help Hotline Crisis Center who will discuss wintertime blues and how to avoid depression. The meeting will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the activity center at Shepherd of the Valley, 9111 Sharrott Road.
Jury returns verdicts
YOUNGSTOWN -- A Mahoning County Common Pleas Court jury acquitted Robert Shelton of felonious assault Tuesday, and convicted him of cocaine possession. Shelton, 26, of Ford Avenue, faces one to five years in prison for the cocaine charge.
Judge Robert Lisotto allowed him to remain out of jail while a background check is done. The jury deliberated about four hours before returning the verdicts. The felonious assault charge was for the shooting of Alex Scott in September 1998.
Workshops set forconservation contest
CANFIELD -- The Mahoning Soil & amp; Water Conservation District has scheduled its second annual Backyard Conservation Contest workshops for 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Thursday.
Participants can attend either session to pick up contest rules, a backyard conservation booklet and tip sheets. The workshops will be at the district office at 490 S. Broad St., across from the fairgrounds.
Participants will present a plan of their conservation measures, and six semifinalists will be chosen to proceed with their plans. Three winners will receive reimbursement of their expenses for up to $500.
The program is meant to educate homeowners on holistic approaches to the conservation of soil and water. Some practices include composting, mulching, tree planting and water conservation. For more information call (330) 533-2231.
