Meech namedMVP for volleyball
YOUNGSTOWN -- Senior Kristen Meech was named the 2001 Youngstown State volleyball Most Valuable Player after a vote by her teammates.
Meech, a 6-foot-2 middle hitter, led the Penguins with a .290 hitting percentage, 1.21 blocks per game and was second with 275 kills and 2.86 kills per game. She also averaged 1.66 digs per game.
A 2001 third-team Verizon/CoSIDA Academic All-American, Meech is YSU's all-time leader with 562 career blocks and fifth all-time with 1,055 kills. She also finished third with a .267 career hitting percentage.

Curbstonebanquet
The Curbstone Coaches will hold their annual high school awards banquet on Jan. 27 at Mt. Carmel Auditorium. Tickets for that banquet can be obtained by calling Joe Falgiani (330) 758-6708, Sam Rogers (330) 707-0234 or Byrd Gampetro (330) 792-2820.
The Curbstoners will not meet next Monday due to the Martin Luther King holiday.

Guest speaker for the event is Youngstown State baseball coach Mike Florak.

Miller, Pascaletie for championship
YOUNGSTOWN -- Dave Miller, 91, tied for first place with Alphouso Pascale with a score of 1299 in the Youngstown Senior tournament.
Seventeen bowlers participated in the 75-year and older division, with Harold Ford placing third with 1293 and Frank Mediate with 1277.
In the 70-74 bracket, John Skerkavich took first place in 1327. Don Morrow was second with 1279, Allen Giesler third with 1278 and William Dechert fourth with 1263.
George Protain won the 65-69 division with 1332. Ron Theis was second with 1321, Dan Wojton third with 1314 and John Martin fourth with 1311.
Geneva's Dalicandronamed All-American
BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- Geneva College punter Vince Dalicandro was named NAIA first team football All-American, becoming only the sixth player in the school's history to be named a first team selection.
Dalicandro finished the 2001 campaign as the NAIA's top punter with an average of 40.9 yards on 58 attempts. He has served at the Golden Tornadoes punter the past four season.
In addition, he rotated on and off as Geneva's place kicker during his career. Last year, he converted 6-of-11 fields and made 30-of 35 PATs for the Golden Tornadoes.
Ryan Snydernamed by NCAC
WOOSTER -- The College of Wooster sophomore reserve guard Ryan Snyder, a Sebring High graduate, was selected as the North Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week.
Snyder, who entered the week with 50 points and 29 rebounds through 12 games, scored 45 points on 16-of 28 field goals and grabbed 16 rebounds leading Wooster to three wins. He also had 5-of-12 3-pointers and tossed in 8-of-10 free throws, registered five assists, one blocked shot and a pair of steals.
Chaney honorsfootball teams
YOUNGSTOWN -- Josh Terlecki and Fernando DeChellis were named the winners of the Jeff Nameth Unsung Hero Award when the Chaney High football team was honored recently at a banquet.
Robert Liberatore received the Red Angelo Scholastic Award while Ed Molina and Chris Hlinka won the Pat Grossen Weightroom Award.
Jack Bohla was honored with the Michael Wilson 12th Man Award and Josh Dama received the Special Teams Award.
Receiving most valuable player awards were: Hlinka and Lamar Sykes, freshmen; Chris Eskew, sophomore; Ed McElroy, junior; and Juan Serrano, senior.

Rejection request
NEW YORK -- In a letter to New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Comptroller William Thompson asked the city to reject a tentative $1.6 billion deal to build new stadiums for the Mets and Yankees.
Thompson wrote that the contract, negotiated by former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, contains "certain troubling provisions" -- including an escape clause for the Yankees that Giuliani had denied existed.
Magic for sale
ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Orlando Magic are for sale after being stymied in efforts to get a new arena and failing to fully recover from the loss of Shaquille O'Neal in 1996.
The Magic are losing about $10 million annually, team officials said.
The buyer also would get the Miracle of the WNBA.
NBA fines
NEW YORK -- Los Angeles Lakers guard Mitch Richmond was fined $5,000 by the NBA for extending his middle finger toward fans in Auburn Hills, Mich. on Jan. 8.
Cleveland Cavaliers coach John Lucas was fined $7,500 by the NBA for verbally abusing officials and refusing to leave the court fast enough after Cleveland's loss in Seattle on Jan. 11.
