NEW MIDDLETOWN -- Village council has authorized advertising for bids for village park improvements and road paving .
The park bids are for work to be done this year under an Ohio Department of Natural Resources grant and include construction of a pavilion and a new tennis court and purchase of playground equipment for 2- to 5-year-olds. In addition, a state grant will fund a walking path and refurbish a tennis court.
Bids for a bike park, also slated for construction this year, will be advertised as soon as specifications are completed.
A public meeting for discussion of the park project is set for 11 a.m. Jan. 26 in council chambers. The park is behind the municipal building.
Council also agreed Monday to advertise for bids for paving Middletown Road, Mapleview Court, Eastwood and Maplewood Roads.
In other business, council authorized purchase of a $280,600 firetruck from America LaFrance of Pittsburgh. Delivery is expected in nine months, and the truck will be paid for over 10 years with the proceeds of a 2.5-mill fire levy passed last year.
Randy Powell of America LaFrance was at the meeting and said the truck will have a light tower capable of illuminating half a football field and will pump 1,500 gallons of water per minute, compared to the 1,000 gallon-per-minute capacity of the current truck. The village can cancel the order up to seven days before delivery.
Other business: Council authorized spending up to $3,000 for installation of fiberboard over insulation in the new addition to the municipal garage. The county building inspector will decide if it meets county standards when the fiberboard is added, village Administrator Robert Mason said. However, the village will first seek a clarification on the order because the fiberboard was not required when the plans were submitted to the building department.
Council also authorized Fire Chief Bill Opsitnik to apply for a computer grant and a Federal Emergency Management Agency fire equipment grant.
Council reappointed Thomas Fok and Associates of Youngstown to handle the village's engineering work.
Bill Douglas was re-elected council president.
Harry Kale was named as a new member of the Site Design Review Committee.
All other committees were renamed. Committee heads are: safety, Rich DeBucci; legislative, Bill Douglas; building, parks and grounds, Dan Santangelo; finance, Becky Mason; and community affairs, Ruth Miller.
