Champion beats Falls with game on 'line'



CHAMPION -- The Champion High girls basketball team scored 13 of its 15 overtime points at the foul line, as the Golden Flashes defeated Newton Falls, 48-36, in a Trumbull Athletic Conference game Monday.
Brianne Kochunas and Jessica Carpenter each had four foul shots in overtime, as Champion (6-7, 5-4 TAC) made 13-of-21 at the line in the extra session.
Elizabeth Wood led Champion with 14 points and six rebounds, while Kochunas finished with 11 points. Jessica Wood also had six rebounds.
Desiree Sterling scored 18 points to pace Newton Falls (11-2, 7-2).
Hubbard 70, Lakeview 41: CORTLAND -- Lakeview played Hubbard on even terms for the first half, but the second half belonged to the Eagles who remained in the title hunt.
Hubbard led 26-23 at the break but junior Katy Jo Mroski scored eight of her 27 points in a 26-point third quarter that gave the Eagles a 52-33 lead.
Jamie Duvall scored 18 points and Lynle Cornell added 12 more for the Eagles (11-2, 8-1 TAC).
Amy Harrison scored 14 points and had 10 rebounds while Megan McBride added 13 points for the Bulldogs (4-8, 3-6). Hubbard had more rebounds, 33-25.
Southington 49, LaBrae 43: SOUTHINGTON -- Rebecca Derr, Rachael Ullinskey and Lindsay Byer scored 16, 13 and 12 points, respectively, for Southington in a non-league game.
Natalie Bate scored 18 points for the Vikings (0-12) who led 13-7 after one quarter. The game was tied at 21 at the break.
Byer scored eight points in the third when the Wildcats jumped in front, 36-33.
Ullinskey had eight points in the fourth quarter.
