COITSVILLE -- Walter Avdey was named chairman and Gerald Backo vice chairman of Coitsville Township board of trustees. Reappointments are George Hahn as police chief, Nick Pope as fire chief and David Rusu as road superintendent. Angie Verotsko was reappointed to the zoning board, and Jim Harrison was reappointed to the zoning board of appeals.
Job group directors
YOUNGSTOWN -- Mahoning County Juvenile Court Judge Theresa Dellick and Jim Herrholtz, regional office manager for the Ohio & amp; Vicinity Regional Council of Carpenters, have been elected to the Mahoning Valley JOG Inc. board of directors. Mahoning Valley JOG is responsible for providing jobs to at-risk students ages 14-21 who participate in the state's Jobs for Ohio's Graduates program.
Boy faces charges
AUSTINTOWN -- A 13-year-old boy was arrested around 3:30 p.m. Friday at Austintown Middle School after the assistant principal found a Daisy Model 93 BB gun in his book bag, police said. According to police reports, the BB gun was "indistinguishable from a true firearm." The assistant principal searched the sixth-grader's locker and book bag after another pupil told school personnel that the boy was going to bring a gun to school, police said. The boy was incarcerated at the Mahoning County Juvenile Justice Center pending charges.
Untagged deer
ROGERS -- Failure to tag a downed deer has cost a Rogers man, according to the Ohio Division of Wildlife. Ricky L. Laughlin, 29, of Dutchtown School Road was apprehended by Columbiana County Wildlife Officer Scott Blattert on Dec. 9, 2001. Blattert noticed blood on Laughlin's hands, which led him to the trunk of Laughlin's car where there was a dead doe without the required tag. For possession of an untagged deer, Laughlin paid a $500 fine and $400 in restitution. East Liverpool Municipal Judge Melissa B. Emerling also revoked Laughlin's hunting rights for two years, suspended a 60-day jail sentence and placed him on two years' probation. In 1993, Laughlin was convicted of failure to purchase a deer permit.
Panel elects officers
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown/Mahoning Valley United Way Executive Director's Committee elected officers for 2002. They are: president, Constance Shaffer, executive director, YWCA; vice president, Nancy Voitus, executive director, Catholic Charities Regional Agency; secretary, Paul Garchar, executive director, Potential Development; treasurer, Suzanne Tucci, executive director, Visiting Nurse Association.
Boy charged in chase
CANFIELD -- A 16-year-old Poland boy is facing several charges in Mahoning County Juvenile Court as a result of a police chase. The boy is charged with fleeing, reckless operation, no seat belt, false identification, drug abuse, possession of alcohol by a minor and driving under the influence of alcohol. Police said they tried to pull the boy over around 9:30 p.m. Thursday on U.S. Route 224. Police didn't release a report on the arrest until Saturday. Another driver had called police on a cell phone to report the boy's erratic driving. Instead of stopping for police, the boy drove north on Cardinal Drive to South Briarcliff Drive, where he lost control and struck two trees. He was treated for injuries.
Dancers raise money
YOUNGSTOWN -- Local square dancers participated in the 10th Annual Charity Dance at Berea High School to raise money for Berea Children's Home. The 243 northeastern Ohio square dancers included Bob and Judy Cadman of Mineral Ridge, Kristy Lake of Hanoverton, and Tom Rudebock of Leetonia. Performing rounds, line dancing, advanced square dancing and other dances, the dancers raised $4,279 for the children's home -- the largest total to date. Dancers have raised more than $40,000 for the children's home since the inception of the charity dance.
