Man faces chargesin scuffle with cop
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- A Hookstown, Pa., man faces charges of aggravated assault, resisting arrest and criminal trespass after a scuffle with a Pennsylvania State Police trooper.
Kevin E. Young, 45, of Hanover-Kendall Road was arrested at 7:13 a.m. Sunday at the Crossroads Food Mart on West State Street, Union Township. Police said Young assaulted the trooper after he was told to leave Crossroads for disturbing customers and employees.
Young was arraigned by District Justice James Reed and was in the Lawrence County Jail. The trooper was treated at Jameson Hospital, according to police.
Untagged deer
ROGERS -- Failure to tag a downed deer has cost a Rogers man, according to the Ohio Division of Wildlife.
Ricky L. Laughlin, 29, of Dutchtown School Road was apprehended by Columbiana County Wildlife Officer Scott Blattert on Dec. 9, 2001. Blattert noticed blood on Laughlin's hands, which led him to the trunk of Laughlin's car where there was a dead doe without the required tag.
For possession of an untagged deer, Laughlin paid a $500 fine and $400 in restitution for the deer. East Liverpool Municipal Judge Melissa B. Emerling also revoked Laughlin's hunting rights for two years, suspended a 60-day jail sentence and placed him on two years' probation. In 1993 Laughlin had been convicted of failure to purchase a deer permit.
Panel elects officers
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown/Mahoning Valley United Way Executive Director's Committee elected officers for 2002. They are: president, Constance Shaffer, executive director, YWCA; vice president, Nancy Voitus, executive director, Catholic Charities Regional Agency; secretary, Paul Garchar, executive director, Potential Development; treasurer, Suzanne Tucci, executive director, Visiting Nurse Association.
Guilty plea
PITTSBURGH -- Cynthia Smith, 43, of Hamilton Avenue, Farrell, pleaded guilty in federal court to a charge of conversion of Social Security benefits by a representative payee.
In connection with the guilty plea, Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul E. Hull advised the court that Smith was the representative payee for Frank Smith, permitting her to receive and handle his monthly Social Security benefits. After Frank Smith's death in 1993, Cynthia Smith continued to cash 97 of those checks in the total amount of $69,789 without authority, Hull said.
Her sentencing is set for 2:30 p.m., April 5.
Gunpoint robbery
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Pennsylvania State Police said a 39-year-old man and a 13-year-old boy were robbed at gunpoint Friday. Police said two men took $327 and other items from the victims somewhere along township Route 301 in Harlansburg, Scott Township.
Dancers raise money
YOUNGSTOWN -- Local square dancers participated in the 10th Annual Charity Dance at Berea High School to raise money for Berea Children's Home.
The 243 northeastern Ohio square dancers included Bob and Judy Cadman of Mineral Ridge, Kristy Lake of Hanoverton, and Tom Rudebock of Leetonia. Performing rounds, line dancing, advanced square dancing and other dances, the dancers raised $4,279 for the children's home -- the largest total to date.
Dancers have raised more than $40,000 for the children's home since the inception of the charity dance.
Car hits post office
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- An 80-year-old Ray Street driver crashed into the Cascade Street post office. Police said Stanley Majocka was pulling into the post office parking lot when his foot got stuck under the gas pedal at 5:09 p.m. Friday. They said his car crashed into shrubs and the building, breaking a window. Majocka had a bloody nose but refused treatment, police said.
