MERCER, LAWRENCE COUNTIES Beef exhibitors capture ribbons at Farm Show
Farmers from this end of the state took some top honors with their beef cattle.

Mercer and Lawrence County residents did well at the at the 86th annual Pennsylvania Farm Show, which ended its six-day run Thursday at the Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg.
Local participants did particularly well in various cattle judging competitions.
Dale Rains of Mercer took a number of honors in the Angus beef cattle division, including being named premier exhibitor in that category.
He took first place in several junior heifer calves contests, had both the junior heifer calf champion and the reserve junior bull calf champion, took first-place finishes in the breeder competition for exhibitors of at least six cattle and had a number of second-place finishes as well.
Simmental division: Haven Woods Farms of Stoneboro did well in the Simmental beef cattle division, showing the winning junior heifer calf, the winning early summer yearling heifer, the reserve senior champion heifer, the champion bull calf, the winning senior bull calf and the top Produce of Dam.
Haven Woods also scored a second place in the early junior yearling heifer competition.
Limousin breed: Edward W. Nicol of Maple Lane Farm, Enon Valley, took some top honors in the Limousin beef cattle competition.
He showed the reserve junior champion heifer, the reserve champion heifer calf, the champion heifer calf, the grand champion heifer, the champion bull calf, the reserve champion bull calf, the reserve grand champion bull and the Breeder's Best among winners showing five cattle.
He had other top finishes in several categories and was named premier exhibitor and premier breeder in the Limousin division.
Dealing with live animals wasn't the only way local show participants won honors.
Connie Scott of Pulaski had the reserve champion breed wool fleece and took first place in the Merino Ewe Fleece and the Rambouillet Ram Fleece competitions.
She also finished in the top five in five other fleece categories.
