Struthers Middle Schoolwins state News Bowl
STRUTHERS -- Eighth-grade pupils from Struthers Middle School finished first in the state News Bowl 2001 Fall Tournament out of more than 100 teams and went on to finish 21st in the country. They missed the top 20 by one question. Teams from seven grade levels answered current-event questions via computer Nov. 20.
Eighth-grade team members included James Woodward, Sara Donofrio, Tristan Suchora, Margaret Gonzalez, Carol-Ann Miller, Daniel Centofanti, Michael DuPonty, Sara Lordi, Jessica Groves, Michael Colucci, David Barth, Christopher Kadvan, David Yash, Eric Krestel and coach/teacher Mark Carden.
SRU honored forenvironmental stance
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- The National Wildlife Federation has named Slippery Rock University one of 12 universities nationwide for exemplary work in setting environmental goals and policies.
SRU received the exemplary rating for reducing pollution, recycling, energy conservation, water conservation, protecting natural habitats, growing organic food, buying environmentally sound products, making sound environmental investments and designing environmentally conscious buildings, said Julian Keniry, manager of the federation's Campus Ecology Program.
SRU officials credited the recognition in part to the Macoskey Center, where students grow organic vegetables and study sustainable systems, and the new Physical Therapy Building, which opened in August.
College search is topicof Girard workshops
GIRARD -- Girard High School has scheduled two college-search workshops for its senior and junior students and their parents. "Making College Count" will be presented at 1 p.m. Wednesday, and "Making Your College Search Count" will be at 1 p.m. Jan. 29.
Parents must report to the main office and sign in before attending the program in the school's auditorium.
McKinley High Schoolfinancial aid seminar
NILES -- McKinley High School will conduct a free financial aid seminar at 7 p.m. Jan. 23 in the school cafeteria. The meeting is open for any area student and their parents. Registration scheduledfor Quantum LEAPS
CHAMPION -- Registration for Trumbull County's Quantum LEAPS program will be from 3 to 4 p.m. Tuesday at Warren G. Harding High School. Registration also will be from 3 to 4 p.m. Wednesday at Badger High School in Kinsman, Thursday at Liberty High School, Jan. 23 at LaBrae High School in Leavittsburg and Jan. 24 at Champion High School.
The eight-month, school-sponsored program is for Trumbull County residents ages 14 to 21. The program, sponsored by the Trumbull County Department of Job & amp; Family Services and Trumbull County Educational Service Center, teaches learning, employment, academic and personal skills.
