BERLIN CENTER -- Western Reserve Board of Education has hired five assistant football coaches based on recommendations from head coach Lew Speece.
Speece, whom the board hired in December, outlined the experience of the coaches. At the top of Speece's recommendations was Ed Klein, a retired teacher who has 26 years of experience and who has had the head coaching positions at Girard, Campbell Memorial and Ursuline high schools.
Rod Hice, who coached with Speece at Garrettsville and Mineral Ridge and who has been coaching various sports since 1977, also was hired.
Steve Wyllie, a former coach at Mineral Ridge, Ursuline and Jackson-Milton, also will assist Speece as will Dale Mitchell II, a Louisville teacher and former Malone College assistant coach.
Retained: The lone coach hired from the 2001 staff was Gary Ferrando, who's been coaching at Western Reserve three years. Ferrando was a former assistant at Ursuline and Girard in addition to playing for Youngstown State University for two years.
"This is a very experienced staff," Speece told the board at its Thursday night meeting. "They've coached football and other sports. All the coaches have been in the weight room to meet the players, and everyone but the basketball players have been in to see them."
Speece added that Mitchell, whose responsibility at Malone was to recruit, would be able to help players who wanted to continue to play in college, primarily at Division III schools.
Speece said he plans to meet soon with Dale Reese, middle school principal, to talk about hiring junior high coaches.
Other sports: The board also hired Joe Serensky Sr. as head softball coach and approved Douglas Harmon, Neil Moracco, Thomas Shugart and Katie Tieche as assistant softball coaches.
The board named Paul Henderson as head baseball coach. Terry Kekic, Dale Moore and Joseph Serensky, Jr. were hired as assistant baseball coaches.
