Michael Doss stays in school

Whether it was the influence of Ohio State Football Coach Jim Tressel or the wise words of Michael Doss' mother, instead of leaving OSU a year early for the National Football League the Buckeye star is returning to the university to finish his education. Good for him.
Many collegiate athletes have been tantalized by the glitter of a professional career, only to find the sparkle gone when the career ends prematurely and they have no college degree to fall back on. In choosing to delay his professional career by a year and finish his education, Doss has exhibited the good sense and maturity that is often lacking in too many athletic hotshots.
Easy out: It could have been easy for Doss to see dollar signs instead of a diploma. Plenty of Ohio State standouts have opted for matter over mind -- tight end Darnell Sanders and cornerback Derek Ross, this year alone. But the Canton-McKinley graduate, who was given a lot of credit for the victory over Michigan on Nov. 24, had a surprise for the press gathered to hear his announcement last Wednesday.
With tears in his eyes, he simply said, "My mother told me to get my education, and I will be returning back to Ohio State."
The NFL will still be there next year.
