CORTLAND -- Operation Christmas Eagle, a project that provided gifts to 375 military personnel stationed on the aircraft carrier, USS Kitty Hawk, and the destroyer, USS Curtis Wilbur, is looking for $3,000 in donations to cover the cost of sending 42 cartons of gifts.
The boxes were shipped by Priority Mail. Initially, Lakeview High School freshman Katy Chaney, 14, and her grandmother, Sally Mazer, who started Operation Christmas Eagle, tried to send the packages by military airlift.
That was unsuccessful because of security and legal concerns.
Katy's father is a lieutenant commander aboard the USS Curtis Wilbur.
Weathersfield schools
MINERAL RIDGE -- Weathersfield Board of Education has named Bruce Bacak board president and Debbie Maust vice president.
Treasurer Angela Lewis said the board will receive a detailed report from her at the Jan. 30 meeting of a five-year forecast in which she projects a deficit of $1 million.
The board will meet Feb. 6 at 10 a.m. in the superintendent's office in the middle school for second reading and revision of a new school policy book.
The board also approved purchase of a dump truck with a plow and hitch at an estimated cost of $30,000.
Bids for prescriptions
WARREN -- Trumbull County commissioners will advertise for bids to provide pharmaceuticals to inmates at the Trumbull County Jail.
The county has been buying prescription drugs for inmates from several companies, without bids. Last year, the county paid $56,000 for prescription drugs for inmates.
Trumbull County Sheriff Thomas Altiere promised to put the contract out to bid when questioned about a big increase in the annual costs by The Vindicator last month.
Joint agreement
WARREN -- Trumbull County commissioners have approved a joint economic development agreement between the city of Hubbard and Hubbard Township.
The agreement, already approved by trustees and city council, covers the site west of U.S. Route 62 and state Route 7 and north of Interstate 80 that is to be developed into Flying J travel plaza.
Hubbard Township will get real estate and personal property tax from the Flying J properties, while the city will get all income taxes from plaza employees.
The city will provide all utilities, and the township will offer police and road services. Costs of any necessary road improvements will be divided by the township and city.
Adult education
LIBERTY -- The board of education is considering development of adult education classes.
To help the board determine the feasibility, interested residents should contact the board office at (330) 759-0807 before Jan. 25.
Classes being considered include floral design, landscaping, perennial gardening, photography, sign language and wedding planning.
Fees will be charged. Classes will only be offered if there is sufficient interest and available instructors.
The board has announced it will continue to meet the second Tuesday each month in the high school community room, caucus at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting at 7.
Child-support charge
CLEVELAND -- Warren J. Poole Jr., 45, of Rockville, Md., has been charged with two counts of willful failure to pay child support by the U.S. Attorney's Office.
Poole is accused of failing to pay $375 monthly for his child, who lives in Warren. Poole is $5,000 in arrears, dating back to 1998, according to authorities.
The case was filed under the federal Deadbeat Parents Act of 1998.
Building tours
HOWLAND -- The public can tour the new township government center through the end of the month. The building on Niles Cortland Road is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Visitors will be escorted by township officials.
Officers elected
HOWLAND -- Township trustees have elected Richard Clark chairman and Richard Orwig vice chairman.
The trustees will continue to meet the second Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m., and the fourth Wednesday at 3 p.m.
