NEW YORK -- The Black Crowes are dead ducks. After more than 10 years of hits and hell-raising, the swaggering Southern rockers -- anchored by battling brothers Chris and Rich Robinson -- have called it quits, reports The New York Post.
Sources close to the band are blaming Chris Robinson's wife, actress Kate Hudson, best known for her role as a groupie queen in Cameron Crowe's "Almost Famous," for the bust-up.
Though stopping short of branding Hudson rock's latest Yoko Ono, who was widely blamed for the breakup of The Beatles, a source says: "Ever since Chris married Kate, the whole band dynamic has changed. He's just not around the guys the way he used to be."
Backstreet Boytalks about arrest
NEW YORK -- Nick Carter said he was simply "in the wrong place at the wrong time" when he was arrested Jan. 2 at a Tampa, Fla., nightclub. "I ain't a bad person. I've never been in trouble my whole life," said Carter, at 21 the youngest of the five Backstreet Boys. "I was basically in tears almost." In a phone interview Tuesday with MTV News during the "Total Request Live" video countdown show, Carter said he was arrested after a fight at the club that didn't involve him got blown out of proportion.
An acting engagement
LOS ANGELES -- One of Hollywood's most notorious bachelors, Charlie Sheen, is engaged to actress Denise Richards. Publicists for both confirmed the engagement but did not reveal a date. It will be the 36-year-old actor's second marriage and the first for his 29-year-old fianc & eacute;e.
Sheen, who stars as the New York deputy mayor on the ABC sitcom "Spin City," has appeared in "Platoon," "Wall Street," and other films. The son of Martin Sheen of NBC's "The West Wing" made his film debut at age 9.
Richards has appeared in "Wild Things" and the most recent James Bond movie, "The World is Not Enough." She has done guest spots on "Spin City" as a campaign manager for the mayor's rival, with whom Sheen's character has an affair.
Elton John receivesgroup's Hero Award
LONDON -- Honored for his efforts to help those living with AIDS and HIV, Elton John said he was fortunate not to have contracted the disease.
"As a gay man, I'm very lucky not to be infected," he told ITV News on Wednesday. "My concern nowadays is that young people think they are invulnerable, but they're not."
John was interviewed after the U.K. Coalition of People Living with HIV and AIDS gave him its Hero Award on Wednesday night. The honor acknowledged his contributions to the fight against HIV and AIDS through the Elton John AIDS Foundation.
