SHARON, Pa. -- Former city Police Chief Raymond C. Greene has been named manager of security services at Sharon Regional Health System.
Greene, who doesn't officially retire from the city until mid-February, will help coordinate all security-related issues at the hospital and work with local law enforcement agencies on health-care security issues.
Drug charges
LIBERTY -- Two New Castle men face drug-trafficking charges here.
Peter Young, 22, and Raymond Mercer, 23, both of Grant Street, appeared Thursday on the charges in Girard Municipal Court.
Police were called to 3040 Green Acres Drive on Thursday morning because unauthorized people were in a condominium.
While checking the condo, police reported finding 17 bags of suspected marijuana and more than $150 cash. The men told police the marijuana was for their personal use.
Tax-sale properties
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Lawrence County commissioners hired the law firm Cusick, Leymarie and Long to handle title searches of property going up for sale because owners are delinquent paying their taxes.
The firm will be paid $170 for each title they research. They will have 60 days to get the work done and then property owners will be notified of the sale in the next 60 days. Those who pay their taxes will not have their land sold. The sale will occur sometime after landowners are notified, commissioners said.
Zone expansion
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- City council approved a plan Thursday to expand its enterprise zone to include nearby communities. City officials are proposing a new enterprise zone, a state designation that gives low-interest loans and tax incentives to businesses locating in those areas, that includes Neshannock, Union, Shenango, North Beaver and Taylor townships.
Those communities also have to approve the plan before it goes into effect.
Home burglarized
HADLEY, Pa,. -- Pennsylvania State Police said thieves took $2,623 in cash and personal property from a home on the Fredonia-Hadley Road between 9:30 and 10:30 a.m. Thursday.
The intruders forced open the front door of the home and made off with two Remington 12-gauge shotguns, $89, two sets of diamond earrings, a heart-shaped diamond necklace, a Black Hills Gold necklace, eight rings and a set of star-styled earrings.
Charges of indecency
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Police accused a city man of having indecent contact with an 89-year-old personal care home patient.
Ralph J. Brown, 69, of RD 6, Box 477, Lot 54, faces three counts of indecent assault. He was arraigned before District Justice David Rishel and released on $5,000 bond.
Pennsylvania State Police said the victim lives in the Duff Personal Care Home in Slippery Rock Township and the assaults occurred from June 1, 2001 to Jan. 6.
Elderly warned of scam
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Pennsylvania State Police said elderly people should be wary of a new telephone fraud designed to take their money.
Police said callers, usually from Canada, are telling elderly people that a large check is waiting for them, but being held up by customs or some other excuse. They then ask the elderly person to send a $1,500 check to free up the other money.
Police urge senior citizens not to respond to the scheme and note the telephone number of the caller if they have Caller ID. Anyone contacted by such a fraud should call the local police department.
Meeting site changed
GREENFORD -- South Range Board of Education has changed its Monday night meeting site to the middle school here.
The annual budget hearing will begin at 7:15 p.m., followed by the annual organizational meeting. The board's regular, monthly meeting will be after the organizational meeting.
Zoning appeals opening
CANFIELD -- Trustees are accepting applications from township residents interested in serving a five-year term on the township board of zoning appeals.
Residents are asked to drop off a letter of interest and a r & eacute;sum & eacute; at the township office at 21 S. Broad St. before Jan. 25.
