HERMITAGE Police charge odometer rollback

He reduced the mileage before returning the vehicle to GMAC, according to the police.
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- Pennsylvania State Police have charged a car salesman with tampering with the odometer of a leased car.
Jeffrey D. Huff, 28, of Brentwood Street, Youngstown, was arraigned before District Justice Henry Russo on the official charge of "prohibited activities relating to odometers" Dec. 12.
Russo freed him on $20,000 bond and Huff faces a preliminary hearing on the felony charge at 11 a.m. Jan. 30.
Police identified Huff as a car salesman for Stupka Motors at 1455 N. Hermitage Road.
Police said the investigation went on for more than a year and additional charges may be filed against Huff.
Police said that on July 28, 2000, a customer went to Stupka Motors where Huff conducted a GMAC Smartlease condition report and odometer statement on the customer's 1998 Oldsmobile Aurora which was being turned in at the end of a two-year lease.
The vehicle had approximately 64,000 miles on its odometer at the time and the lease allowed only 30,000 miles, police said.
Alleged rollback: Huff took possession of the car for about 45 minutes, and upon the return of the vehicle, the odometer displayed only 34,200 miles, police said.
The car was returned to GMAC and the odometer discrepancy was later discovered when records were compared with previous General Motors warranty work that had been done on the vehicle, police said.
