UNION TOWNSHIP Pa. police arrest man in jewelry store theft

The suspect's picture was matched with video from a store surveillance camera.
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Pennsylvania State Police said they finally got their man -- under the right name.
Police initially believed they were searching for Deverick Duncan of Cleveland because a car registered in his name was seen leaving the King's Jewelry Store in Union Township on Aug. 19, 2000, after about $60,000 in jewelry was stolen.
But when police matched Duncan's photo and surveillance video from the jewelry store, they found out they were two different men, said Trooper Joseph Vascetti, criminal investigator for the Pennsylvania State Police.
Police later learned they were searching for Paul Edward Smartt Jr., 44, of Longview Road, Solon, Ohio.
Arrested Monday: Smartt was arrested Monday in Solon, an affluent suburb of Cleveland, and was placed in the Cuyahoga County Jail. He is waiting to be transported to Pennsylvania to face charges of retail theft, theft, criminal conspiracy and receiving stolen property.
Vascetti said an officer with the Ohio parole office was able to match Smartt with the video surveillance taken from the store, and that led to Monday's arrest.
Accomplice sought: Authorities said they still don't know the identity of a second man who helped distract the store clerk as the jewelry was taken. The second man is described as a light-skinned black man, with blue eyes and black hair, in his 30s, 6 feet tall and weighing 200 pounds.
