Dog bites woman
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 27-year-old city woman was in stable condition in St. Elizabeth Health Center this morning after being bitten on the leg by a pit bull dog Tuesday evening in the 3100 block of Hudson Avenue.
Esperonza C. Tillery told police her former live-in boyfriend ordered the dog to attack her during an argument over her occupancy of the premises at 6 p.m.
Tillery said she was supposed to move out last week. The man and the dog were gone when police arrived.
Four children left the premises unharmed with family members.
Buckeye 5 winner
YOUNGSTOWN -- Doreen M. Morgan of Youngstown has claimed a $100,000 top prize in Monday's Buckeye 5 drawing, beating 1-in-435,897 odds, the Ohio Lottery Commission announced Tuesday. After federal and state taxes, she'll receive $69,500.
Her ticket was bought at Plaza Book and Smoke Shop in Austintown, which will get a $500 bonus for selling the winning ticket.
With two additional forthcoming drawings on her exchange ticket, she has two more chances of winning $100,000, the commission said.
Attacked with bottle
CAMPBELL -- A 40-year-old Jackson Drive man entered police headquarters with a cut on his head, telling officers he had been hit with a beer bottle by a 25- or 26-year-old man he knew during a fight at the Valley Cafe on Robinson Road.
The man said he was at the bar at about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday when his girlfriend became involved in a verbal altercation with the female cousin of his assailant, police reports show. The man said he had attempted to intervene in their argument when he became involved in a fight with the other man.
He said his assailant also smashed the windshield of his car as he drove away from the bar after the fight. Police had been called to the bar but arrived after the victim left. They found the other man, who said he had been in the fight but did not want to file a report.
Austintown burglaries
AUSTINTOWN -- Jewelry and a computer were among the items reported stolen Tuesday from township residents.
The jewelry was reported stolen by a Harvard Place resident, who said she found her floor marked by snow and fresh footprints at about 7 p.m. She later found the jewelry missing from her bedroom.
The computer, meanwhile, was reported stolen from the grades 5 and 6 classroom at St. Ann school on Kirk Road. A custodian said the computer was last seen Friday.
Teens cited for drugs
CANFIELD -- Two teen boys were cited for drug abuse after police found suspected marijuana residue in a car driven by one of the teens. The car was parked in the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center lot.
The teens, both 17, also were cited for delinquency and possession of drug paraphernalia. One of the teens lives on Akron-Canfield Road, Canfield, and the other lives on Berlin Station Road, Berlin Center.
Center officials called police about 9:15 a.m. Tuesday after a secretary reported that the boys smelled like marijuana. The teens later told school officials that they had smoked a marijuana cigarette on the way to school. Police found rolling papers with suspected marijuana residue and a clamplike instrument in the car driven by one of the boys.
Democratic Party post
NILES -- The Trumbull County Democratic Party executive committee has reappointed party Chairman Nicholas J. Melfi to a four-year term on the board of elections.
Melfi, who has served on the elections board for six years, was unopposed for the seat during Tuesday's meeting at Alberini's Restaurant.
Trumbull 911 equipment
WARREN -- Trumbull County 911 is requesting an additional $209,000 from the commissioners this year to cover lease payments for a computer system that processes calls.
The emergency call system was able to make its first lease payment for the technology last year by cutting in other areas, director Tim Gladis told the commissioners.
