Schools collect coins for cancer

YOUNGSTOWN -- The American Cancer Society's annual Kids Coins for Cancer campaign is under way through Jan. 28 in 24 Mahoning County schools.
Money raised is used by ACS for cancer research and quality-of-life programs, such as Generation Fit, which the society offers to schools.
The Target store of Niles is a primary sponsor this year, and will provide gift certificates valued at $100, $75 and $25 to the top money raisers. Also, the top three classes will receive a bowling party at A-Plus Family Bowling, Youngstown, and pizza from Wedgewood Fernando's Pizza, Austintown.
Other prizes include tickets for Six Flags World of Adventure, Regal Cinema and Mahoning Valley Scrapper baseball games and T-shirts.
Chairmen of this year's event are James Carchedi of Austintown Watson Elementary School; Catherine Wigley of St. Luke's School, Boardman; and Kenneth E. Ekis of Poland McKinley Elementary School.
Generation Fit is a comprehensive approach to health promotions that gives pupils ages 11-18 ways to act on issues related to nutrition and physical activity in their schools, after-school programs and youth clubs.
