Beckner to signwith Wofford
NEWTON FALLS -- Tim Beckner, a member of the Newton Falls High football team, has made a verbal commitment to attend Wofford (S.C.) College.
Beckner, a 6-foot-3, 288-pound lineman, started three seasons at defensive end and two years at offensive guard. He has a 3.2 grade point average.
He was a team captain, made first-team all-Trumbull Athletic Conference and was honorable mention all-state.
Wofford, a NCAA Division I-AA school, is a member of the Southern Conference.
Curbstonerspostponed
BOARDMAN -- The Curbstone Coaches weekly luncheon Monday at the Lockwood House was postponed until Feb. 4.
Wally Bell, an American League umpire from Boardman who was scheduled to be the guest speaker, will return for the Feb. 4 luncheon.
Canfield youthtourney planned
CANFIELD -- The Canfield High girls basketball program will conduct the Cardinals Early Bird Tournament for fifth and sixth grade teams on the weekends between Jan. 13 and Feb. 3.
Teams are guaranteed a minimum of five games.

Borderhawkshold first place
BOARDMAN -- The Youngstown Borderhawks Pee Wee Class A Major hockey team, which holds first place in the Cleveland Suburban Hockey League, will resume play Sunday against Cleveland Heights in a 2 p.m. game at the Ice Zone.
The Youngstown team, consisting of players ages 11-12 from Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana and Mercer counties, have a three-game lead in the standings with six games remaining, three of them at the Ice Zone.
The other two remaining home games are Jan. 27, against Mentor at noon; and Feb. 3, versus Geauga at 3:30 p.m.
Stringer familyplans to file Jan. 15
MINNEAPOLIS -- Korey Stringer's survivors expect to file a wrongful death lawsuit against the Minnesota Vikings and several former and current team employees a week later than planned.
Attorneys representing Stringer's wife, son and parents planned to file the lawsuit today. But lead attorney Stanley Chesley had a scheduling conflict with another case and postponed the filing one week.
Stringer, a 6-foot-4, 335-pound offensive tackle, died Aug. 1 after suffering heatstroke at the team's training camp.
The family will seek more than $100 million, Stringer's agent James Gould.
Among the individual defendants expected to be named are former coach Dennis Green; interim coach Mike Tice, Stringer's position coach when he died; team doctor David Knowles; and trainers Fred Zamberletti and Chuck Barta.
Campo returnsfrom hospital stay
IRVING, Texas -- Dallas Cowboys coach Dave Campo returned home to Dallas on Monday afternoon after an overnight stay at a Detroit hospital.
Campo spent the night at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit because of flulike symptoms after the Detroit Lions beat Dallas 15-10 on Sunday.
The team also said Campo would continue with hip replacement surgery today as scheduled.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- Defensive end Phil Hansen, one of the last ties to the Buffalo Bills' Super Bowl years, announced his retirement.
Jordan's wifeseeks divorce
CHICAGO -- Michael Jordan's wife has filed for divorce, seeking to dissolve her 12-year marriage to the world's most famous basketball player, the Chicago Tribune reported on its Web site.

Bobsleddertests positive
LEIPZIG, Germany -- The international bobsled federation confirmed one positive doping test, but wouldn't identify the athlete. The results of a second test aren't available yet. The athlete tested positive for the banned steroid nandrolone during a training week at the start of December at the Olympic course at Park City, Utah.
Cyclist banned
STOCKHOLM, Sweden -- Swedish cyclist Nicklas Axelsson was reportedly banned from competition for four years after he tested positive for traces of the banned endurance-boosting drug EPO after the road race in the World Cycling Championships in October in Portugal.
