Facing multiple charges
AUSTINTOWN -- Bond has been set at $250,000 for Jeffery R. Jones, 22, of Albright-McKay Road Northeast, Brookfield.
Jones appeared Monday before Judge Loren Popio in Mahoning County Court here on charges of aggravated robbery, kidnapping, grand theft and safecracking. He will be back in court for a preliminary hearing at 9:30 a.m. Thursday.
He was arrested by the police in Louisville, Ky., on information from Austintown police that he left the area by bus after Antone's Restaurant was robbed at gunpoint about 9:53 p.m. Wednesday.
Police expect to make more arrests.
Grief counseling set
HUBBARD -- An organizational meeting for Grief Recovery Instructional Support Groups will be at 7 p.m. next Tuesday in Kelley-Robb Funeral Home Care Center.
This 24th series of recovery groups is led by Philip Roland, grief counselor at the funeral home since 1991, and open to anyone who has suffered a loss.
The 10-week program is designed to help begin the grief-recovery process and set new goals, said Dennis Robb, funeral home owner.
An extension of the instructional group meets twice a month and brings grieving people together to help one another. Mary Jean Hunt, a registered nurse, is the facilitator for that group.
There is no cost or obligation.
Mayor's address
CORTLAND -- Mayor Melissa Long says she is pleased with the work city lawmakers did last year and hopes more projects will be completed this year.
During her state of the city address at Monday's council meeting, Long said several road projects were completed in 2001 and state and federal grant money was approved for affordable senior housing at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church.
The mayor said she hopes that infrastructure work on South High Street can be completed this year.
New captain takes oath
WARREN -- The city has a new police captain. Michael Vugrincic, formerly a lieutenant, was sworn in Monday.
He replaces Dennis Steinbeck, who recently took the police chief's post in Champion. Vugrincic has been with the department since January 1982.
Meeting rescheduled
MINERAL RIDGE -- The Weathersfield Township Zoning Commission has rescheduled its meeting from Wednesday to 6 p.m. Jan. 17 in the township administration building.
Putting band together
GIRARD -- An effort is under way by Sue Ellen Davis, high school vocal teacher, and Joe Commarata, elementary band director, to establish a community band.
Residents, alumni, former students and all ages are welcome. The group will meet weekly at the high school.

Possible cause of fire
GIRARD -- Firefighters say a wood-burning stove may be responsible for a Monday night blaze at the Elmer Hecker home at 110 Steel Ave. that caused $7,000 to $10,000 damage. The fire broke out shortly before 10 p.m. on the first floor near the stove in the two-story frame structure.
Man to return to court
NILES -- A Newton Falls man will return to municipal court Monday. Police arrested Joshua G. Santone, 22, of Hallock-Young Road, Friday on menacing by stalking and public-indecency charges. Santone is free on bond. He's accused of driving up to two women outside of the Eastwood Mall without any pants on.
