SALEM -- Police are investigating the theft of a 5-horsepower push lawn mower and a 10-foot stepladder from a garage at a Carole Drive home. Police said this morning that the theft occurred Saturday night.
Home burglarized
SHARON, Pa. -- Police reported this morning that a home in the 700 block of Carnegie Street was burglarized. They said the residents left at 5:30 p.m. Friday and returned about an hour later to find that intruders had forced open a back door and ransacked a bedroom, taking a small amount of cash and some jewelry.
Car overturned
SHARON, Pa. -- Police said this morning that they had no estimate on damage to a 1991 Ford Escort overturned by vandals. They said a woman heard strange noises outside her home about 4 a.m. Saturday. When she looked outside, she saw the car on its roof in a neighbor's yard. Police said the car had been parked on the east side of State Line Road near Wilson Street.
Installing warning lights
SHARON, Pa. -- Mayor Robert T. Price said work would begin in two weeks on installing flashing yellow pedestrian-crossing lights on Connelly Boulevard between the city building and South Water Avenue. Residents of the area, which includes two apartment buildings for the elderly, had asked for the warning lights, the mayor said. The crossings are already marked on the street, but the lights will alert motorists more effectively, Price said.
Tracking down arson
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Police said footprints in the snow led them to an arson at a vacant home. City police said they were investigating a break-in on South Mercer Street early this morning when a set of footprints led them to 224 N. Walnut St., which was on fire. Fire had been started in various parts of the house, including the basement and a second-floor bedroom, at about 1:26 a.m. today, police and fire officials said. Firefighters said there was about $8,000 damage to the house, which is owned by Christopher Liliestedt. Police said they followed the footprints away from the burning house and have a suspect. However, no charges had been filed as of this morning.
Gable's cycle to appear
WARREN -- The National Packard Museum has rescheduled a display of Clark Gable's 1938 Harley-Davidson "Knucklehead" motorcycle for Jan. 12-13 only. The museum at 1899 Mahoning Ave. had indefinitely postponed the appearance of the Knucklehead, originally scheduled for Jan. 14-15. The display is part of the "Thunder of the Road" exhibit, which opens Tuesday and runs through April 20. It's a collection of nearly 30 vintage motorcycles spanning 80 years of production. Man suffers burns
NILES -- A 94-year-old man was seriously burned Sunday when he dropped a match on himself while smoking in his basement. The match ignited Nick Limongi's slippers, socks and pants and the chair he was sitting in, fire department reports say. Firefighters responded to the blaze at 1460 Kearney St. shortly after 8 p.m. and quickly put out the fire with minimal damage to the house. Limongi was taken to the burn unit of Akron Children's Hospital, where he was in fair condition today. His wife was treated for smoke inhalation in the Forum Health Trumbull Memorial Hospital emergency room.
Child's play sets fire
YOUNGSTOWN -- A child playing with a lighter at 325 E. Dewey Ave. on the South Side ignited a mattress and pillow in a bedroom at the house about noon Sunday, the fire department said. Damage to the two-story frame house was estimated at $7,500. No injuries were reported.
