MAHONING VALLEY United Way extends '01 campaign
The Youngstown/Mahoning Valley United Way 2001 campaign report will be Feb. 12.
YOUNGSTOWN - The Youngstown/Mahoning Valley United Way 2001 financial campaign was at 85 percent of its goal Friday.
Garry Mrozek, senior vice president of corporate banking for National City Bank, and chairman of the 2001 campaign, said the annual campaign has been extended through January.
Mrozek said $2,751,093 has been raised so far, and that volunteers are continuing to work to raise the $498,907 still needed to reach the $3,250,000 goal.
A final campaign report will be given at a meeting Feb. 12.
Funding programs: The local United Way provides funding for 90 programs through 31 agencies, six community chests and emerging community programs.
Services provided include child day care, emergency services, shelter for domestic violence victims, supportive services for the elderly population and other critical human needs.
Don Cagigas, UW president, said the softening economy and terrorist attacks of Sept. 11 have had a negative impact on the annual campaign.
& quot;Unfortunately, during difficult times, the demand for the services provided by our agencies is even greater.
"We must raise $3,250,000 to continue to meet the most critical needs of our community, and we need the support of the entire community to help use reach this goal," he said.
Cagigas emphasized that it is not too late for local businesses to run a workplace campaign, or for individuals to make a donation.
