LIBERTY -- Former Youngstown Mayor Patrick J. Ungaro is vying to become Liberty Township administrator.
Ungaro was questioned by township trustees during a closed session Wednesday.
Administrator Darlene St. George is leaving to become Howland Township administrator. St. George officially becomes Howland administrator April 1 but will begin training March 18.
Trustee Jack Simon said no decision has been made on hiring Ungaro and no offer will be made until he discusses it with Trustees Patrick Durina and Gary Litch.
Simon said Ungaro, an assistant principal at West Junior High School in Youngstown, was willing to take the job and expressed no opposition to moving into the township.
No other interviews are scheduled, Simon said.
Letter carrier honored
YOUNGSTOWN -- Letter carrier Robert J. Kosmo was honored for 40 years of service during a ceremony this morning at the main post office.
Youngstown Postmaster Patricia Davis and plant manager John Upthegrove presented Kosmo with a certificate of appreciation and a 40-year pin. Fellow letter carriers celebrated with cake.
Kosmo was hired Feb. 17, 1962, and delivers mail in neighborhoods on the city's West Side.
"He's outlasted pretty much everyone in the carrier section," said Burnell Grieve, customer services supervisor.
Threats at Taco Bell
AUSTINTOWN -- Police are investigating a report that a man threatened to assault employees at Taco Bell on Mahoning Avenue Wednesday night because his friend's food was cold.
An employee told police that the man's friend asked for a refund at about 9 p.m. The man then threatened the employees and asked them to fight in the parking lot.
A manager asked the man to go outside.
Counterfeit bills found
AUSTINTOWN -- A counterfeit $20 bill was used Tuesday at Wedgewood Lanes on South Raccoon Road. It was the third counterfeit $20 found in the township this week.
The manager of the bowling alley found the bill Wednesday and called police.
Police also received a report Monday that a Girard man received two counterfeit $20 bills when he cashed his check at Giant Eagle on Mahoning Avenue.
School bus assault
YOUNGSTOWN -- City police arrested a 14-year-old East Middle School pupil on charges of assault and failure to comply with the order of a police officer after reportedly punching a schoolmate on a school bus and then fleeing through an emergency exit door. The schoolmate said he was punched in the head four or five times and suffered a bump over his left eye.
Police were called to the bus, and the teen escaped as they spoke with a bus driver. Officers caught him, and he was taken to the Mahoning County Juvenile Justice Center.
Port authority chiefresigns from post
VIENNA -- C. Dino Theofilos, chairman of the Western Reserve Port Authority Board for three years, resigned this morning.
Theofilos, appointed to the board in 1995 by Trumbull County commissioners, said he recently became president of St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, Warren, and no longer has the time to serve on the board.
"It's been a great seven years," Theofilos, president of Carlson Wagonlit Travel Agency, said at this morning's board meeting. "I've got to say that this has absolutely been the finest board that I have ever worked with."
The board elected Reid Dulberger, a vice president of the Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber of Commerce, to replace Theofilos as chairman.
The port authority oversees operations of the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport in Vienna.
Arson charge arrest
YOUNGSTOWN -- City police have arrested a South Side man accused of pouring gas around and in his wife's home last summer. Clarence Jennings, 45, of West Warren Avenue, faces a charge of aggravated arson. The wife told police she arrived home at about 7:40 p.m. June 30 to find Jennings in her bed. When she asked him to leave, he said no and poured gas on the front porch and around a kitchen stove before overturning the stove. The woman and the couple's son were outdoors at the time.

BOARDMAN -- An archaeologist will give a public slide presentation concerning the Hartley Mastodon, the bones of which were found last year near Salem, at 6 p.m. Sunday in the Boardman Park Community Center.
