WARREN -- Trumbull County residents have the opportunity next month to learn a lifesaving technique.
"It's an annual event and every year it gets bigger," said Bonnie Wilson, director of health, safety and community services. "Last year, we had 100 people and I'm hoping for 125 people this year."
March is Red Cross Month.
"Each chapter tries to do a special thing in their community," Wilson said.
The CPR Saturday event gives Trumbull County residents the opportunity to learn life-saving CPR techniques.
The training is set for March 9 at eight locations throughout the county and costs $10.
The locations are:
URed Cross office, 661 Mahoning Ave. N.W.,
USouth Eastern District Red Cross office, 401 Vienna Ave., Niles,
UHoliday Inn, state Route 46, Howland,
UKinsman Public Library, 6420 Church St., Kinsman,
UFowler Fire Department, state Route 193, Fowler,
UHubbard Community Pool, 250 Hall Ave., Hubbard,
UOrange Village Care Center, 8055 Addison Road, Masury,
UNewton Falls Community Center, 52 E. Quarry St., Newton Falls.
Classes will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Call the Red Cross at (330) 392-2551 by March 6 to register.
"People can take the training and get certified by doing the test and demonstrating the skills," Wilson said.
What's included: The training includes rescue breathing, first aid for choking and CPR. Rescue breathing is used when a person has stopped breathing but their heart continues to beat while CPR, which includes breathing and chest compressions, is used when both breathing and the heart have stopped.
"It could happen to anyone anywhere that someone has an incident when their heart stops," Wilson said.
There's no age requirement to take the class, but participants must be able to read at an eighth grade level and have the upper body strength to execute chest compressions.
The classes usually attract a variety of participants.
"We have some caregivers -- family members who may be looking after aging parents," Wilson said. "We also have some people who come in as a family, a husband and wife, for example, who want to take the course together."
