YOUNGSTOWN -- An 11-year-old Summit Academy pupil was arrested on a felonious assault charge, accused of trying to stab an assistant principal with a ballpoint pen. The pupil, a fifth-grade boy, told police he tried to stab the man because he would not let him go to a movie.
Police were called to the 345 Oak Hill Ave. school at about 2 p.m. Tuesday, where they found the administrator restraining the pupil. He said he had wrestled the pupil to the ground when the boy tried to stab him.
Also on Tuesday, police received a report from a teacher at West Elementary School, 134 N. Hazelwood Ave., who said she hurt her ankle and hand attempting to restrain a disorderly pupil last week.
The teacher said she fell when she grabbed the 6-year-old boy around the waist last Thursday after he started yelling and waving his arms and legs at another pupil.
Vehicle stolen
AUSTINTOWN -- A four-wheel all-purpose vehicle and two safety helmets were stolen Tuesday morning from the back yard of a North Yorkshire Boulevard home.
The vehicle owner said the thief pried open a section of the wooden fence that surrounds the yard and then pushed the vehicle to the road.
Prescription probe
AUSTINTOWN -- Police are investigating a report that a Youngstown man tried to fill a stolen prescription Wednesday evening at Kmart on Mahoning Avenue.
An employee said the man, 21, of North Osborne Avenue, tried to fill his aunt's prescription for a cough suppressant at about 7 p.m. The aunt told the employee that the prescription had been stolen.
Police stopped the man after he picked up the prescription, and the drug and the prescription form were confiscated as evidence. The man was released pending further investigation.
Suspected pot turned in
CANFIELD -- A Columbiana-Canfield Road man gave police a plastic bag containing 2 grams of suspected marijuana Tuesday evening.
He said he found the bag in the parking lot of Giant Eagle on U.S. Route 224 at about 7 p.m. and took it directly to the police station.
Vehicle donations
GIRARD -- Cars for Kids Sake is a national vehicle donation program that benefits the Big Brothers & amp; Big Sisters of Mahoning Valley. Under the program, people donate vehicles, boats and motorcycles to the organization and receive a tax deduction for the fair market value of their vehicles.
Big Brothers & amp; Big Sisters, a nonprofit organization that provides one-to-one mentors and role models for at-risk children, then sells the vehicle and receives the proceeds. People who want to donate a vehicle may call (800) 710-9145 for information about the program and to answer some preliminary questions about their vehicle.
Milton aids F.D.N.Y.
LAKE MILTON -- Milton Township Volunteer Fire Department raised more than $2,600 to send to the New York 9-11 Fallen Firefighters Fund.
The fund was set up by the International Association of Fire Fighters for the sole purpose of helping families of fallen firefighters and emergency medical personnel in New York City as a result of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
The 30-member force raised the money through a raffle and donations.
Junk-car reminder
LAKE MILTON -- Township trustees remind residents that there is a zoning ordinance that prohibits the public display of abandoned, wrecked or dismantled motor vehicles on private property.
Farm equipment, trucks, trailers, furniture or any other material also must be housed in appropriate quarters.
The zoning inspector will conduct a survey and occupants will have 90 days to comply. If the occupants fail to comply, a citation will be issued. Inquiries can be made through the zoning inspector by calling (330) 538-0078.
