LORETTO, Pa. -- The Youngstown State women's tennis team defeated St. Francis (Pa.) 6-1 on Sunday.
Youngstown State (4-2) junior Annie Marino was a double-winner, at No. 2 singles and with Jen Meister at No. 1 doubles.
Leslie Banks was also a double-winner, at No. 3 singles and with senior Jenny Vodhanel at No. 2 doubles. Vodhanel also won at No. 4 singles.
Freshman Megan Vodhanel won at No. 6 singles and teamed with Julie Playforth for a No. 3 doubles victory.

St. Rose fundraiser
GIRARD -- The St. Rose School Athletic Booster Club will hold a Parents Basketball Fundraiser on March 9 at the school gym.
Registration is at 11 a.m. and the cost is $10 per person, which includes registration and T-shirt. The fund-raiser is open to parents and relatives of St. Rose students and parishioners, Make checks payable to St. Rose Booster Club. For additional information call Allyne Richey at 545-1900.
Niles tickets
NILES -- Niles High boys basketball tickets for Friday's tournament game at Boardman will be on sale in the Niles athletic office Thursday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students. The Red Dragons will play Liberty at 6:30 p.m.
Micah Harrisplaying linebacker
DURHAM, N.C. -- Micah Harris, a freshman on the Duke University football team from Poland High, will be trying to win a starting job at linebacker when the Blue Devils begin spring drills March 18.
Harris turned in an outstanding freshman season for Duke in 2001 with 31 tackles while playing in all 11 games.
Harris' top two showings were seven tackles against Georgia Tech and six vs. Clemson. He also had five stops at North Carolina, and came up with his first career interception against Northwestern.
The Blue Devils will open the 2002 campaign Aug. 31 at home against East Carolina.
Harris, the son of Diane and Rick Harris, is studying pre-medicine in Trinity College at Duke.
Blewitt sets meet,arena records
HILLSDALE, Mich. -- Adriane Blewitt, a junior at Ashland University, placed first in the shot put with a new meet record and new Philips Arena record of 51 feet, 2 3/4 inches at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships.
A Boardman High graduate, Blewitt also won second place in the 20-pound weight behind teammate Jackie Jeschelnig with a toss of 61-5.
Blewitt has previously qualified for NCAA Indoor Nationals in both events. They will be held in Boston on March 8-9.
Bethany teamsin tournament
BETHANY, W.Va. -- The Bethany College men's and women's basketball teams have received invitations to the 2002 NCAA Tournament.
The men (20-7) received an at-large bid, and as the sixth seed will play at Pitt-Bradford on Thursday at a time to be determined.
The women (21-6), making their third straight trip to the tournament, are the fourth seed and will play host to Benedictine (Ill.) on Wednesday at a time to be determined.
Davis, Hemsingnamed All-PAC
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Boardman High graduate A.H. Davis and Kennedy Catholic High graduate Eric Hemsing are among five Thiel College basketball players named to the 2001-02 Presidents' Athletic Conference team.
Davis, a junior forward, earned first team honors after averaging 17.1 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. He also became the sixth player in school history to total 1,000 career points and now stands at 1,151.
Hemsing, a senior guard, was named to the second team after becoming the school's all-time leader in 3-point field goals, finishing his career with 183. He averaged 11.7 points per game.
For the women, senior forward Sara Snyder and sophomore guard Amanda Swanson were named to the first team, while sophomore forward Danielle Mezzulo was named an honorable mention.
Thiel wrestlers 7th
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Thiel College wrestling team placed seventh at last weekend's NCAA Division III Midwest Regional qualifier.
Manchester won the team competition with 136 points.

Bonilla retires
NEW YORK -- Bobby Bonilla, who set the NL record for career home runs by a switch-hitter and helped the Florida Marlins win the 1997 World Series, officially retired.
The free agent finished his career with 287 home runs, 1,173 RBIs and a .279 average for eight teams. His 247 homers in the NL marked the most by a switch-hitter.

* FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- Baltimore Orioles pitcher Buddy Groom agreed to a $6.25 million, two-year contract extension with a team option for 2005.
* HAINES CITY, Fla. -- Chad Durbin, expected to be Kansas City's No. 4 starter, signed a one-year contract with the Royals worth $275,000 plus incentives.
