Boardman trackin competition
BOARDMAN -- The Boardman High boys will compete in the Ohio Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches indoor track championships at French Field at Ohio State University Friday.
Curbstone
BOARDMAN -- Dick Creed, a 15-year on-field National Football League official who now works with instant replay, will be the guest speaker Monday when the Curbstone Coaches Association gathers for its noon luncheon at the Lockwood House.
All-OAC
ALLIANCE -- Senior point guard Erin Bryson and Freshman center Ashley Bourdeau of Mount Union College have been named to the All-Ohio Athletic Conference women's basketball squad.
A three-year starter, Bryson averaged 6.3 points per game 2.7 assists leading the Raiders in total assists with 71, while making 76 consecutive starts over that span.
Bourdeau averaged 11.5 points and led the team with 8.8 rebounds, while starting all 26 games this season.
Track clinic
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- A Learn by Doing Track and Field Clinic will be held March 3 at Slippery Rock University in Morrow Field House.
The clinic will be highlighted by Roger Kingdom, a two-time Olympic 110-meter hurdle champ.
Also serving as an instructor is Gary Aldrich, who is a leading throws clinician.
In addition, there will be a PIAA Track and Field Officials Certification session for those who wish to be track and field officials this spring.
All track and field events will be covered. The clinic is open to athletes and coaches of all ages.

Horse showat fairgrounds
CANFIELD -- The Northern Ohio Quarter Horse Association-Approved Show will be held April 27-28 at the Canfield Fairgrounds.
American Quarter Horse shows test horses' abilities in dozens of difference classes and feature events such as jumping, reining, barrel racing, cutting, roping and pole bending. Additionally, halter classes, which judge American Quarter Horses based on balance, muscling and breed characteristics, are held.
People who exhibit at an American Quarter Horse show earn points that turn into awards or cash at the end of the year. By competing at an AQHA show, exhibitors and horses also can qualify for the AQHA or American Quarter Horse Youth Association World Championship shows, the premier events in the equine industry.

Brad Heffron namedto all-star teams
NORTH CANTON -- Brad Heffron, a senior on the Walsh University soccer team from Austintown Fitch High, has been named to two Ohio Collegiate Soccer Association all-star teams.
Heffron, a forward and midfielder, was selected to the Academic All-Ohio team and also the All-Ohio second team.
Heffron has a 3.24 grade-point average as a biology major for his Walsh career thus far.
This past soccer season, he played in all 19 games and scored seven goals with three assists for 17 points.
Washington onClarion team
CLARION, Pa. -- Tameka Washington, a graduate of Warren Harding High, has helped the Clarion University women's basketball team to a berth in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference playoffs.
Clarion opens the PSAC playoffs Tuesday at either California (Pa.) or Shippensburg.
Washington, a 5-foot-7 junior guard, averaged 8.0 points and 3.6 rebounds through 25 games, as the Golden Eagles went 12-13, including 6-6 in the PSAC-West.
Washington scored 12 points coming off the bench as Clarion overcame a 19-point deficit to beat Indiana (Pa.), 86-73, last Saturday.
It was the Golden Eagles' first playoff berth since the 1996-97 season.
Washington is 74-for-175 (42.3 percent) from the field, including 14-for-49 (28.6 percent) from 3-point range; and 38-for-45 (84.4 percent) from the foul line. She also has 54 assists and 23 steals.
Thayer namedto academic squad
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Robin Thayer, a senior guard on the Westminster College women's basketball squad from Salem and South Range High, has been named to the Verizon College Division Academic All-District Women's Basketball First Team.
Thayer, a four-year starter who is Westminster's all-time leading scorer with 1,287 points, has a 3.634 grade-point average as a major in financial economics.
Thayer scored 15 points Wednesday as the Titans defeated Case Western Reserve, 66-53, in their regular-season final.
For this season, she is averaging 14.1 points, 4.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.5 steals.
Westminster (14-11) has applied for a bid to the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division II playoffs, scheduled for March 9-10.

Pole vaulter diesat Big Ten meet
MINNEAPOLIS -- Penn State pole vaulter Kevin Dare died Saturday after landing on his head during the Big Ten indoor championships.
After being treated by emergency medical technicians, Dare was taken to the Hennepin County Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
Dare, 19, was a sophomore from State College, Pa.
Dare won the pole vault in the U.S. junior championships in June, clearing 16 feet, 63/4 inches.
Scott Johnson, media relations coordinator for the meet, said the team coaches decided late Saturday to continue all events today, including the pole vault competition.
