Equipment for ALS

Relay for Life
CANFIELD -- The American Cancer Society is seeking cancer survivors in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties to participate in one or more of the 10 local Relays for Life scheduled this May and June.
Relay for Life is a 24-hour event that runs from 6 p.m. on a Friday to 6 p.m. Saturday. Teams are formed from families, churches, organizations, schools, businesses, corporations, public employee groups, health-care professionals and others. Survivors do not have to be on a team to participate in the opening lap.
Relays will be in Champion, Cortland, Liberty, Warren, Austintown, Boardman, Youngstown State University, Columbiana, East Liverpool and Lisbon. Survivors interested in participating should call (330) 533-0546 or toll-free at (888) 227-6446.
Weight loss center
YOUNGSTOWN -- Humility of Mary Health Partners and Specialty Health Services Management have entered into an agreement to develop and operate a Center for Comprehensive Weight Loss at St. Elizabeth Health Center. Specialty Health Services Management, based in Wyoming, is a developer of specialty health-care partnerships. The center will focus on patients who are more than 100 pounds overweight and thus considered clinically severely overweight. Mental illness class
The National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI) is offering a 12-week evening course for families of individuals with mental illness, taught by NAMI-trained family members of the mentally ill, beginning Feb. 26. All materials are furnished at no cost, and strict confidentiality is maintained.
The curriculum focuses on schizophrenia, bipolar disorder (manic depression), clinical depression, panic disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Call (330) 782-6476 or (330) 545-9148 for more information and to register.
Lamaze class offered

Aging mind seminar
AUSTINTOWN -- Alterra Clare Bridge Cottage of Austintown, along with the Alzheimer's Association, Dr. Charles Wilkins, and Anna Jannetti, memory care specialist and resident director of Alterra, will offer a program on "The Aging Mind" from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday The seminar is co-sponsored by Help Hotline-Crisis Center. Self-defense class
CANFIELD -- Three police officers will teach a women's self-defense class March 20 from 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. in the community building at Fair Park.
The class, Personal Response Options & amp; Tactically Effective Counter Techniques for women is free and open to women and girls 14 years old and older. Girls under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. An optional instruction book will be available for $12. Enrollment is limited to 60 students.
