Penguins signsoccer standouts
YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown State head soccer coach Liz Bartley announced the signing of three student-athletes to national letters of intent to play for the Penguins.
Signing were Jennifer Jennings, a goalkeeper from Warren Harding; Maura Patton, a defender/forward from Medina; and Jessica Yarter, a midfielder from Wellsburg, W.Va.
Jennings had 88 percent saves and three shutouts her senior year. Patton recorded 11 goals and three assists and was second team All-Pioneer Conference. Yarter holds the single-season scoring record for Brooke High with 41 goals and was the team's MVP.

Liberty's Beineckegets Big East honor
PITTSBURGH -- Brian Beinecke, a junior linebacker for the University of Pittsburgh football team from Liberty High, has been selected to the Big East All-Academic Football Team for the third time.
Beinecke, a movement science major, was one of 10 Pitt players picked to the academic team. He has a 3.31 grade-point average.
Boardman graduatequalifies nationals
HUNTINGTON, Ind. -- Huntington College's Jonathan Doyle, a Boardman High graduate, qualified for next weekend's NAIA Indoor National Track and Field Championships in the 55 high hurdles.
He ran a time of 8.08.

ALLIANCE -- Mount Union senior forward Todd Richards and senior Erin Bryson were named to the All-Academic second team for Ohio Athletic Conference basketball.
Men's first team members include Ohio Northern juniors Aaron Fries and Chris Wohlgamuth, Capital junior Anthony Ruberg, Baldwin-Wallace senior Jason Schefft and Heidelberg senior Ryan Niemic.
Hole-in-one
GIRARD -- Skeeter Harrison made a hole-in-one recently at Mahoning Country Club.
Harrison aced the 156-yard No. 6 hole using an 8-iron. His shot was witnessed by Chris Griffin, Curtis Tanner and Ezell Jones.

Browns re-sign DE Tyrone Rogers
CLEVELAND -- Defensive end Tyrone Rogers signed a two-year contract with the Cleveland Browns on Friday.
Terms of the contract were not released.
Rogers, who has been with the Browns since their return to the NFL in 1999, played in all 16 games last year, starting 10. He had 41 tackles and was second on the team with six sacks.
Crosscutters nametheir new manager
PITTSBURGH -- Andy Stewart has been named manager of the Williamsport Crosscutters, the Pittsburgh Pirates' minor league affiliate in the New York-Penn League.
Stewart, 31, has spent the last two years as a coach in the Toronto organization.

Final top-10 seedToms still alive
CARLSBAD, Calif. -- PGA champion David Toms birdied the 18th hole to beat good friend Steve Flesch and become the only top-10 seed still around in the Match Play Championship, where the stars are gone but the Stars & amp; Stripes are doing just fine.
Paul Azinger made a gutsy comeback against Niclas Fasth of Sweden with birdies on four of the last five holes. He won in 20 holes, giving the United States seven players in the quarterfinals of the World Golf Championships event.
The only non-American still around was a Spaniard, just not the one everyone expected.
Sergio Garcia, the No. 5 seed, fell behind on the first hole against Scott McCarron and never caught up in a match that was high on gamesmanship but lacked quality shots down the stretch.
They halved the final four holes -- known as "The Longest Mile" in golf -- with two bogeys and two pars, McCarron winning 1-up.
Carrying the flag for the rest of the world is Jose Maria Olazabal of Spain, who pulled away from Mark Calcavecchia with birdies on two of the final four holes for a 2-up victory.

Quigley leads Audi Senior Classic
NAUCALPAN, Mexico -- Dana Quigley shot a 3-under-par 69 in shifting wind conditions Friday to take a one-stroke lead over Walter Hall after the first round of the Audi Senior Classic.
Only seven players in the 78-man field broke par on the Chapultepec Golf Club, a demanding tree-lined layout that stretches to 7,119 yards at an altitude of 7,800 feet.
Mercer County HOFwill induct four
WEST MIDDLESEX, Pa. -- Michael Aiken, Kay Dannels, Donald Minshull and Clyde "Red" Uber will be inducted into the Mercer County Bowling Hall of Fame tonight at the Radisson Inn at 6:30.
Aiken has been a 30-year member of the Mercer County Bowling Association. Dannels has been associated with the Grove City Women's Association for 37 years.
Minshull placed first in all-events in the 1973 Mercer County tournament held at Thornton Hall. Uber has been a proprietor for 28 years.
Guest speaker is Roberta Haffner, a Young American Bowling Alliance certified coach instructor since 1987.
