Former Sen. Meshelgives $100,000 to YSU
YOUNGSTOWN -- Former State Sen. Harry Meshel, a 1949 graduate of Youngstown State University, has donated $100,000 to YSU to set up two scholarship endowments.
The endowments at the YSU Foundation will allow the university to award two $2,500 scholarships annually: the Senator Harry Meshel Award in Jazz and the Evangelos Michelakis Meshel Scholarship in Philosophy, named after Meshel's father.
Meshel served in the Ohio Senate for more than 22 years and was Senate president from 1984 to 1986. Meshel Hall, the university's technology center built in the early 1980s, is named for him.
NEOUCOM employeereceives staff award
ROOTSTOWN -- Reynold T. Notareschi of Poland received the Mary Jane Kelly Award for Staff Excellence at the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine. Notareschi is coordinator of TV and media production at the college.
The award annually recognizes an employee who exhibits enthusiasm, diligence and exemplary loyalty to NEOUCOM students and staff.
Texas native becomesYSU director of grants
YOUNGSTOWN -- Dr. Edward Orona of Boardman, former director of corporate-foundation relations and government grant development at St. Francis University in Loretto, Pa., has been appointed director of the Office of Grants and Sponsored Program at Youngstown State University.
Orona grew up in Corpus Christi, Texas, and has a doctorate in psychology from the University of Texas at Austin. He worked at UT, Emory University in Atlanta and the University of Florida, focusing his research on functions of the brain.
He then went into university administration, first in the office of university relations at Alfred University in New York and then in his current position at St. Francis.
