Michaelis, Gainessweep awards
INDIANAPOLIS -- Youngstown State swept the Horizon League indoor track and field awards this week.
Junior Dolores Gaines and sophomore Kurt Michaelis were named the league's track and field athletes of the week.
Gaines recorded two personal-best marks at the Kent State tune-up with a second-place throw of 43 feet, 3 inches in the shot put and a third place finish in the weight throw (52-1).
Michaelis, who has already qualified for the NCAA championships in the mile run, ran a league-best time (1:51.93) in the 800-meters.
YSU will compete in the Horizon League championships Saturday and Sunday at DePauw (Ind.) University.
The event starts Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and resumes Sunday at noon.

YWBA sponsorsbasket raffle
YOUNGSTOWN -- In conjunction with the Women's International Bowling Congress' designation of February as "Bowl for the Cure" month, the Youngstown Women's Bowling Association is sponsoring a basket raffle.
Several baskets and tote bags will be on display at various bowling centers. Tickets will be sold with proceeds going to benefit selected national and local groups. The fundraiser runs through the end of the women's city tournament.
Evans namedAll-Patriot League
BOARDMAN -- George Evans, a sophomore on the Lehigh University indoor track and field team from Boardman High, gained All-Patriot League honors.
Evans was cited for placing second in the 55-meter dash in 6.46 seconds at the Patriot League meet held recently.
Evans also plays football for Lehigh, and won a letter last fall as a wide receiver for the fifth-ranked team in the final Division 1-AA poll.
Lehigh also made it to the second round of the NCAA playoffs, and won the Lambert Cup as the top Div. I-AA football team in the East.
Yo. Express nameshead coach for team
YOUNGSTOWN -- Bill Mosiello was named head coach for the Youngstown Express summer collegiate baseball team.
Mosiello, a Sacramento native, is an assistant coach at Arizona State University.
McDonald boysadvance in tourney
STRUTHERS -- The McDonald High boys basketball team's opening game in the Division IV sectional tournament at Struthers Fieldhouse, which was slated Monday at 7 p.m. against the Youngstown Youth Academy, has been canceled.
Joe Mogulich, the tournament director, said that Youngstown Youth Academy "pulled out of the tournament," and that McDonald will advance automatically to the second round.
The Blue Devils will face Sebring on March 1 at 8 p.m.

PITTSBURGH -- Gerard Warren of the Cleveland Browns, the second overall pick in last year's NFL draft, agreed to plead guilty to a misdemeanor firearms charge.

* DALLAS -- The Dallas Mavericks pulled off a major deal with Denver just before the NBA trading deadline, getting Nick Van Exel and Raef LaFrentz from the Nuggets.
Dallas sent Juwan Howard, Tim Hardaway, Donnell Harvey, cash and a first-round pick in the upcoming draft to the Nuggets for Van Exel, LaFrentz, Avery Johnson and Tariq Abdul-Wahad.
* MINNEAPOLIS -- Marc Jackson got his wish and was traded by the Golden State Warriors to the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Golden State will receive center Dean Garrett and a second-round draft pick in 2007 from the Timberwolves.

TUCSON, Ariz. -- The Mets and Colorado Rockies traded right-handed relief pitchers, with Kane Davis going to New York for Corey Brittan.

CARLSBAD, Calif. -- Sergio Garcia proved to be the best 22-year-old in the Match Play Championship. And with another string of surprises, the Spaniard suddenly became the man to beat.
Fourth-seeded Garcia beat Charles Howell III 1-up in the second round.
No. 5 Ernie Els squandered a 3-up lead at the turn to Tom Lehman, and lost on the 19th hole when he missed a 4-foot par putt. Jose Maria Olazabal beat Retief Goosen.
