YOUNGSTOWN Shooting leaves YSU student 'critical' and on life support

YOUNGSTOWN -- A Youngstown State University student was in critical condition on life support at St. Elizabeth Medical Center this morning after being shot in the head and left arm, police and hospital personnel said.
Police were not releasing the identity of the man who was found lying face down with a pool of blood around his head in an open field on the North Side around 3:40 p.m. Thursday. His pockets had been turned inside out as if he were robbed, and no identification was on him, according to police reports.
The man, described in reports as being age 18 to 24, was breathing heavily and shaking, but could not speak to officers who found him about 2 feet from the road at Ada Street and Poplar Avenue.
Officers found no shell casings near the man.
The officers patrolling in the area of Burlington Street and Oakwood Avenue before the shooting said they may have seen the student before the shooting. Police interviewed one witness, reports show.
A small scale, commonly used to weigh drugs, was found in the victim's pocket, reports show.
