TRUMBULL COUNTY Officials approve sewer project

CHAMPION -- Neighboring Liberty and Girard residents may soon be rid of a smelly problem.
Trumbull County commissioners approved contracts Wednesday for the Shannon Road area sanitary sewer improvements.
Liberty and Girard officials have been seeking improvements there because sewage seeping from malfunctioning home septic systems has polluted a pond in Tod Park. Also, the sewage runs through creeks in some Girard neighborhoods.
The project is expected to cost $3 million, commissioners said.
Funding: The county received a $650,000 Issue 2 grant and a $125,000 Issue 2 loan to help finance it.
The county will also try for $900,000 in Community Development Block Grant funds from the Ohio Department of Development and $350,000 from the Army Corps of Engineers.
If those are approved, the county would then have to fund $1.1 million to complete the project, officials said.
The commissioners meeting in Champion High School was attended by about 100 students.
O'Brien said the board met a few months ago in the Liberty Township administration building and hopes to move to another location in the county in the next few months.
"This will give people in those areas an opportunity to attend without having to drive 20 minutes" to Warren, O'Brien said.
