YOUNGSTOWN -- Someone helped a lost Alzheimer's patient who had walked away from his East Side home. City police found Pedro Bonilla Sr. at about 1 p.m. Wednesday at King's Motel in Coitsville, where an unidentified person had helped him check in. Bonilla had walked away from his Clinton Street home at about 4 p.m. Tuesday. Motel employees said a motorist had found Bonilla wandering on the highway and gave him a ride to the motel at about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. Upon checkout Wednesday, motel personnel had difficulty understanding Bonilla and called Coitsville police, who contacted Youngstown police.
Vicious dog killed
YOUNGSTOWN -- A city police officer shot and killed a dog on the city's West Side after it had tried to bite him, police reports show. The officer had been called to the 2600 block of Eddie Street at about noon Wednesday on a report of vicious dogs when two chow dogs ran toward the officer and one attempted to bite him. The officer used his service revolver to shoot the dog, injuring it. When a supervisor arrived, he told the officer to kill it with a shotgun.
Armed robbery
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 53-year-old woman told city police that robbers held a gun to her head after cutting the phone line from her East Side home and breaking in. The woman said she was talking on the phone and watching television in her Dudley Avenue home at about 9:15 p.m. Wednesday when the line went dead and two men forced their way through her front door. One held a shotgun to her head and demanded money and her purse and the other searched the house.
Possible drug charge
STRUTHERS -- Police said they found a piece of suspected crack cocaine during a vehicle search, after a traffic stop at 1:49 a.m. today. Police said they asked to search the vehicle after they noticed its driver, a 45-year-old Lowellville man, and his passenger, a 38-year-old Struthers man, acting strangely. The driver said the substance belonged to his passenger and admitted buying it on Youngstown's South Side. The men were released until the evidence could be positively identified.
Diabetes program
BOARDMAN -- Mahoning Valley Dietetic Association and the Health Ministry team at St. Charles Church are offering a free community program, What's New in Diabetes, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Charles School Auditorium, 7325 Westview Drive. Experts will discuss the latest trends in managing diabetes to prevent further complications, such as heart disease, vascular disease, vision loss and kidney failure. Drug indictment
CLEVELAND -- A federal grand jury has returned a five-count indictment against a South Side man accused of violations of federal narcotics and firearms laws. William F. Daniel, 25, also known as Capone, of East Philadelphia Avenue, faces four charges of possession with the intent to distribute and/or distribution of cocaine base, crack, and one charge of using and carrying a firearm during a drug trafficking crime. On each of two of the drug charges, Daniel faces a prison term of five to 40 years if convicted and a $2 million fine. On each of the other two drug charges, Daniel faces a prison term of 10 years to life if convicted and a $4 million fine. On the firearms charge, he faces a mandatory prison term of five years if convicted and a $250,000 fine.
Gunman robs motel
AUSTINTOWN -- A gunman stole $381 from the cash register at Motel 6 on Seventy-Six Drive at about 6:40 p.m. Tuesday. A motel employee told police a man wearing a brown ski mask and black gloves entered the lobby and asked about room rates. He then pointed a handgun at her. The gunman fled to a blue pickup in the parking lot.
Snowmobiles stolen
AUSTINTOWN -- An $8,300 trailer and four snowmobiles worth a total of $25,000 were stolen from a Mahoning Avenue home Wednesday. Police reports state that the 24-foot, Forest River box trailer contained the four snowmobiles. The trailer is white with silver trim with decals on the side.
