Shots fired at house
GIRARD -- An East Howard Street man told police someone fired several shots at his home Tuesday evening. Officers found two holes. Another shot hit the gas meter and a fourth struck the wood between the dining room windows. Three of the bullets entered the home.
Store manager punched
LIBERTY -- A manager at Ames Department Store told police she tried to stop a man in the parking lot whom she had seen steal two boxes of hand-held radios from the store. The man punched her in the chest, dropped the radios, valued at about $220, jumped into a car and fled north on Belmont Avenue.
Mother arraigned
GIRARD -- A 28-year-old Youngstown woman, who police say ran away from her children in Liberty, has been arraigned in Girard Municipal Court. Christine Colbert of Forest View Drive was released on $1,000 surety bond set Tuesday by Magistrate Mark Finamore. No trial date was set on four counts of child endangering. Police said Colbert's four children -- ages 1 to 7 -- were being watched by a baby sitter, who was supposed to drop them off at Colbert's mother's apartment on Frederick Street in Liberty on Feb. 2. When the baby sitter didn't find anyone home, she left the children outside. The 7-year-old boy told police that when he spotted his mother, she ran off with her boyfriend. The children, two of whom didn't have coats and one with only one shoe, went to their uncle's apartment nearby. He called police.
Trumbull spelling bee
WARREN -- About 50 pupils from 20 schools will participate in the Trumbull County Spelling Bee from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Feb. 27 in Champion High School. The contest is sponsored by Trumbull County Educational Service Center and the Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber of Commerce.
Drug charge
CHAMPION -- A 16-year-old high school student has been arrested on a charge of selling drugs on school property after being accused of selling a prescription drug to another 16-year-old student, police said. Chief Dennis Steinbeck said the boy was arrested Tuesday morning and was being held in the Trumbull County Juvenile Detention Center. The chief declined to say what the drug was, but the girl who bought it became ill after taking it.
Theft from restaurant
MERCER, Pa. -- Two bank deposit bags containing an undisclosed amount of money were stolen from the Lakeway Restaurant overlooking Lake Wilhelm in New Vernon Township, Mercer County. The money was taken between 10 p.m. Monday and 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, according to Pennsylvania State Police.
Men's slacks stolen
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Twenty-nine pairs of men's slacks were stolen Monday from a clothing rack at the Haggar Clothing Store in the Prime Outlets in Springfield Township. Pennsylvania State Police said there were no witnesses.
Tax renewal opposition
POLAND -- The Democrats of the 17th District, a Mahoning Valley political club, has voted 18-8 to oppose Mahoning County's renewal of a 0.5 percent sales tax on the May primary ballot because fewer people vote in primaries than in November general elections.
Free food, clothing
YOUNGSTOWN -- There will be a food and clothing distribution at Heart Reach Ministries, 787 Wick Ave., from noon to 8:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday. There will be live music each day. Services are at 7 p.m. each day. The event is a joint effort by The Jericho Project, In Spirit and In Truth Fellowship, Lesea Feed the Hungry Ministries and Heart Reach Ministries.
Man still missing
YOUNGSTOWN -- City police continued to search today for an 81-year-old Alzheimer's patient who walked out of his East Side home at about 4 p.m. Tuesday. Pedro Bonilla Sr. walked out the front door of the Clinton Avenue home while his wife, who had the flu, napped on a living room couch. Bonilla walked away about a year ago but was found about two hours later. Reports describe him as Hispanic, with gray hair and brown eyes. He is 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighs 145 pounds.
