Council proposals target Avalon South course

WARREN -- City councilman Alford Novak, D-2nd, Bob Marchese, D-at large, and James "Doc" Pugh, D-6th, said they are proposing that the state perform a financial and performance audit on Avalon South Golf Course.
Councilman Gary Fonce, D-at large, said he plans to bring legislation forth to get proposals on how much it would cost the city to bid out management of the course.
These and other Avalon issues will be discussed during a meeting at 4 p.m. Thursday in city council's caucus room in the Municipal Justice Building.
The city is trying to make changes at the troubled course and has given the current operator, Tony Joy Jr., until Friday to vacate his office.
The city and Joy are disputing over unpaid taxes and rental payments at the course. Proposals from the administration include forming a parks board to run all Warren parks, including the course, and to rename the course Avalon Golf Park.
Mayor Hank Angelo's proposal is to choose a five-member board -- three chosen by him, with council's approval, and two chosen by the city school board.
The board of education will be at Tuesday's meeting to get more details on the proposal.
