Judge will run
YOUNGSTOWN -- Judge R. Scott Krichbaum, a Poland Republican, has filed to run for re-election to his seat on the Mahoning County Common Pleas Court bench.
Judge Krichbaum was first elected in 1990 and is the senior member of the common pleas bench. No one has filed to challenge him. The filing deadline is Thursday.
61st District candidate
GOSHEN -- Heather Plues of Goshen was to file her nominating petitions today to run in the May 7 Republican primary for the reconfigured 61st Ohio House District seat. Plues is vice president of the Mahoning Valley Young Republicans and chairwoman of legislative issues for the Rural Republicans. She is the third Republican to file for the position, joining Randy Pope of Alliance and Ronald Barnhart of Beaver. The seat in the current 61st District is held by state Rep. John Boccieri, a New Middletown Democrat who plans to run for re-election. The filing deadline is Thursday. The new district, which takes effect next year, includes Beaver, Smith, Springfield, Goshen and Green townships as well as New Middletown, Sebring and Beloit in Mahoning County. The small portions of Washingtonville and Columbiana located in Mahoning County are also in the district, as well as Carroll County and parts of Stark and Tuscarawas counties.
Cellular theft
GREEN TOWNSHIP -- A 52-year-old West Calla Road woman has reported to deputy sheriffs that someone was making telephone calls using her cellular phone account.
The woman said her cellular phone service provider told her that someone had programmed another phone with her electronic signature number. The calls were made from North Carolina to locations within that state and to Uniontown, Ohio. They totaled $11.40.
Assault on deputy
YOUNGSTOWN -- Four teens staying at Lincoln Place residential center for youths have been arrested in an assault on a Mahoning County deputy sheriff who was working a second job at the facility.
The deputy said he went to the kitchen area around 5 p.m. Sunday after hearing a loud noise and saw a large crowd yelling and screaming, with a Lincoln Place staffer restraining a 13-year-old boy from Columbus. The deputy wrestled the boy to the ground, then stood him up against a wall as the teen resisted.
During the fracas, a 15-year-old Cleveland boy yelled at the officer, grabbing and punching him in the face, until the officer wrestled him to the ground. Two 14-year-old Cleveland boys kicked the deputy. The boys were taken to the county juvenile justice center. The 15-year-old was sent from there to St. Elizabeth Medical Center for stitches to the back of his head.
The deputy suffered a minor injury to his right knee.
All four teens face charges of assault on a police officer. The 13- and 15-year-old teens also each face a charge of resisting arrest. One 14-year-old faces an additional charge of disorderly conduct.
Lincoln Place is a residential facility for youths referred there by juvenile courts and children services boards from across the state.

Arrested after chase
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 23-year-old South Side man who officers say jumped from a moving car after they tried to pull him over last week was arrested when he went to the police department Monday to report the Chevrolet Caprice as stolen.
He faces charges of failure to comply with the order of a police officer, leaving the scene of an accident and two weapons charges. Officers said they had pulled over the man, whom one of the officers knew, at Southern and Midlothian boulevards Friday.
He sped off, running two red lights and jumping from the moving vehicle, allowing it to crash into a utility pole. Police said they found a handgun in the car. The driver had escaped on foot.
