YOUNGSTOWN -- Three firefighters injured Saturday at a house fire at 640 W. Boston Avenue are all recovering, said assistant Fire Chief Joe Jasinski.
Lt. Ron Moran suffered a dislocated shoulder when fire flashed over and knocked him down steps, and Lt. Jim DiMuzio had bruises to his upper body after a slip on the ice.
Firefighter Fred Beehler was treated for second-degree burns to his hands after fire flashed over, Jasinski said.
The fire started about 5:40 p.m. in the attic and did about $30,000 damage to the 2 1/2-story frame rental home.
The cause is under investigation but may have been the result of electrical problems, Jasinski said.
A frozen hydrant delayed firefighting efforts.
Search revealscash, gambling slips
YOUNGSTOWN -- Vice police officers using a search warrant said 69-year-old James A. Kitchen had money and gambling slips in nearly every pocket.
The officers, who stopped Kitchen's car on Ford Avenue Saturday afternoon, found $18 and two betting slips in one pants pocket, $130 in another, $90 in another, $5 in another, $201 in a brown paper bag inside his coat and more betting slips and notepads in his coat, reports show.
A handgun was found inside the car in a velvet bag, police said.
Kitchen, of Fifth Avenue, faces charges of gambling and mishandling a firearm in a motor vehicle.
At the jail, $40 and more betting slips were found in another pants pocket.
Consumer groupto meet about power
YOUNGSTOWN -- People Concerned About Power, a local consumer advocacy organization concerned about rising utility costs, will meet at 7 p.m. Feb. 27 in West Elementary School on North Hazelwood Avenue.
A representative from the Ohio Consumers Council will speak at the meeting.
The group will also discuss a possible bus trip to Columbus to meet with state officials and plans to organize a petition drive to get local officials to consider a community choice program for purchasing power in bulk at a discounted rate.
School applications
YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown Community School will accept applications for the 2001-02 school year from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday and 7:30 a.m. to noon Friday.
Applications will be accepted for kindergarten through the third grade. Forms must be picked up in person at the school at 50 Essex St. No applications will be mailed.
Registration will be determined by lottery pending available space.
Injured in shooting
YOUNGSTOWN -- The house at 318 W. Evergreen Ave. was fired upon and two men were hit several times by gunshots about 2 a.m. today.
Jamal Finley, 23, of West Delason Avenue, and Dante Mauldin, 18, of West Philadelphia Avenue, were in stable condition today in St. Elizabeth Health Center.
The victims offered no motive to police.
Annual concert
YOUNGSTOWN -- The New Bethel Baptist Church male chorus will have its annual Black History Month concert with a worship service at 5 p.m. Sunday in the church, 1507 Hillman St.
Special meeting
WARREN -- Mathews Board of Education will have a special administrative in-service meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Abruzzi's Cafe 422, Youngstown Road. No action will be taken.
Awards luncheon
COLUMBUS -- Among those who received District Trooper recognition at a recent Ohio State Highway Patrol awards luncheon was Trooper Richard C. Baron of the Warren post. Baron is assigned to the patrol's investigative unit.
