Shot in carjacking
YOUNGSTOWN -- A North Side man told city police that he and his cousin were shot in their legs during a carjacking from their Catalina driveway. The man, 27, said his cousin, also 27, had pulled into the driveway in his maroon Cadillac at about 8 p.m. Saturday. Both men were in the car when a stranger with a handgun ordered them out. They left the car and walked toward the house when the stranger fired about four gunshots. The carjacker fled, striking the side of the residence with the car. A car matching the description of the Cadillac was found by police at about 1 a.m. Sunday, tires missing, abandoned on the West Side.
Robbery, carjacking
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 30-year-old East Side woman told police that she was waiting for her friend in her car in front of the Foodway Market at Jacobs Road and Regis Avenue at about 9:30 p.m. Saturday when three men opened the driver's door and ordered her out. One of them had a handgun. Two of the men entered the car while the third robbed her friend. The friend said she was leaving the store when the man showed a gun and threatened to kill her. He stole $100 before getting into the car and fleeing with the other two men. They were followed by a driver in a black Cadillac. The woman's car was found minutes later at Liberty Road and Atkinson Avenue, having crashed into a concrete barrier. The occupants had fled.

YOUNGSTOWN -- A man temporarily staying in a South Side home after his house burned down reported to city police that someone had fired several gunshots into the home. Three children were in the Sherwood Avenue residence during the shooting, shortly after midnight Sunday. Police found three bullet holes in the front door, five on a porch railing, one in a picture window and one through a family room wall. Two bullets were found inside interior walls. The man said he saw two men outside just before the shooting, which occurred after he had been threatened by his son's acquaintance.
Strickland's bid
YOUNGSTOWN -- U.S. Rep. Ted Strickland, a Lucasville Democrat, will formally announce his re-election bid at three stops Wednesday in the new 6th Congressional District. Strickland will appear at the Mahoning County Courthouse at 5 p.m.
Rep. Sawyer cancels
POLAND -- U.S. Rep. Thomas C. Sawyer, an Akron Democrat running for re-election to Congress, had to cancel his appearance Tuesday at the meeting of the Democrats of the 17th District because of a scheduling conflict. Dan Lucas, his chief of staff, will attend, at 7:30 p.m. at the Poland Community Baseball Association hall on Sheridan Road.
Girl is assaulted
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 16-year-old East Side girl reported to police that a stranger assaulted her after forcing her into his vehicle. The teen said she was standing near the WRTA bus station on Federal Street around 2 p.m. Friday when a man driving a blue truck with orange lights on top pulled up to the curb and forced her inside, asking her if she would have sex with him for money. The teen jumped out of the truck as the man was struggling with her.

CAMPBELL -- A 25-year-old Jean Street woman told police her 9-year-old daughter was sexually assaulted by a Monroe Street store owner while shopping for candy. The woman reported taking her two daughters to the store around 8:42 p.m. Saturday. She said the 38-year-old man took one girl to the back of the building and tried to get her to touch him. The 9-year-old said she broke away and ran from the store. Police questioned the man, who denied the report. He said the mother left the store after buying what she wanted, leaving the two girls inside to look around. He said the mother returned inside to purchase the girl's items. Police are investigating.
