LESTER R. STAUFFER Sanitary's founder dies at 90

WARREN -- The founder of the Warren Sanitary Milk Co. died Friday at a Sunnybrook Drive nursing home.
Lester R. Stauffer, 90, served as president of Sanitary's until his retirement in 1980. From the 1940s through the 1960s, the Sanitary's building on Youngstown Road was a popular restaurant with U-shaped counters. Stauffer had said that the building at one time was a "complete dairy processing operation" that made 600,000 gallons of ice cream a year for Mahoning Valley restaurants.
Stauffer also kept award-winning horses that were used to deliver milk from Sanitary's. During a snow storm in 1950, he hooked his horses to a sleigh that was used to deliver milk to babies in local hospitals.
Last year, at a surprise birthday party for Stauffer, Warren Mayor Hank Angelo presented Stauffer with a plaque declaring "Les Stauffer Day."
Stauffer was also a former safety-service director of Warren and a member of several local and national organizations. He is survived by several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at McFarland and Son Funeral Home on North Park Avenue. Church services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church on Mahoning Avenue, Warren.
