YOUNGSTOWN -- A Canfield woman was in critical condition Saturday night at St. Elizabeth Health Center with injuries she suffered when the car she was driving hit a truck on state Route 11.
Christa R. Briceland, 20, of Maple Springs Drive, was admitted in serious condition after the crash Thursday morning, but her condition was downgraded.
The condition of her front-seat passenger, Stacey L. Robinson, 20, of Haymaker Avenue N.W., Warren, was upgraded to stable Saturday. She had been in serious condition.
Man tries to lure girl
YOUNGSTOWN -- A man tried to lure a 12-year-old Volney Rogers Junior High School pupil into his vehicle after she got off the school bus and walked to her Wesley Avenue home on the West Side, police said.
The man asked the girl to get into his black sport utility vehicle at about 2:30 p.m. Thursday, but she ran. He followed her briefly, police said.
Traffic safety blitz
GIRARD -- Police here will conduct a traffic safety blitz Monday through Feb. 28. Officers will focus on U.S. Route 422.
They will be looking for speeders and seat belt violators in an effort to raise awareness of safety issues, including proper use of child restraint seats. Hours of the blitz will be 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Parents Day Out
LISBON -- Parents Day Out programs sponsored by the Ohio State University Extension Columbiana County office will be from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Salem Salvation Army, Feb. 21 at the Wellsville village hall and Feb. 28 at the LaBelle Terrace housing complex, East Liverpool. The sessions will focus on nutrition and comparison shopping for groceries.
The meetings are geared toward families enrolled in county Job and Family Services programs, but the public is welcome, said Jeanne Rumburg, family and consumer sciences extension agent. For more information call Rumburg at (330) 424-7291.
Man in July scuffle dies
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 72-year-old Shehy Street man arrested in July after a scuffle with a police officer has died.
Booker Mitchell died Friday at Forum Health Northside. He slipped into a coma the day after the scuffle and was hospitalized.
An autopsy will be performed at the request of Mitchell's family, who accused the officer of brutality. An internal affairs investigation showed the officer acted professionally.
Professor's lecture
ALLIANCE -- Dr. Alvin Poussaint, professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, will deliver a lecture Thursday at Mount Union College. A board member of Harvard's AIDS Institute, he is a nationally prominent author and social activist. Dr. Poussaint's talk will be at 10:35 a.m. in Presser Recital Hall as part of the McKinley Visiting Scholar Program.
Born in East Harlem, Dr. Poussaint was southern field director for the Medical Committee for Human Rights in Jackson, Miss., from 1965-67, providing medical care to civil rights workers and helping to desegregate southern hospital and health facilities.
